Cubs, Jed Hoyer Reportedly Agree to Contract Extension Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline

Andrew PetersJul 28, 2025

Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer has his team looking like one of the best in the majors, and he was rewarded for his work on Monday.

Per ESPN's Jesse Rogers, Hoyer received a multi-year extension with the Cubs ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Hoyer's contract was set to expire at the end of the season.

Hoyer got his start in the majors as an assistant for the Boston Red Sox in 2002 and helped the team win a pair of World Series in 2004 and 2007. He left Boston in 2009 to join the San Diego Padres as the team's general manager.

He joined the Cubs in 2011 and has been in Chicago ever since.

Hoyer's first role was as the team's general manager, and he helped lead the Cubs to a World Series victory in 2016. In 2020, Hoyer took over as president of baseball operations.

Since winning the World Series in 2016, the Cubs haven't found much success, winning just one postseason series over the past seven years. They have missed the postseason in each of the last four seasons.

But things have taken a turn for the better this year. Thanks to an MVP-caliber season from Pete Crow-Armstrong, strong play from Seiya Suzuki and Dansby Swanson and the addition of former Houston Astros star Kyle Tucker, Chicago looks primed for a deep postseason run.

The Cubs are 62-43 on the year, tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in the National League. Ahead of the trade deadline, Chicago has been linked to a handful of trade candidates, so Hoyer might look to bolster his roster even further heading into the home stretch of the season.
