Schefter Reports Christian Wilkins 'Playfully Went to Kiss' Raiders Player's Head
The Las Vegas Raiders recently released defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and are attempting to void the remainder of the guaranteed money ($35.2 million) on his contract due to his alleged treatment on the rehab from a foot injury, as previously reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Now comes word that there could have been some other issues behind the scenes.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter on the Pat McAfee Show, Wilkins reportedly "playfully went to kiss a teammate" on top of his head, and that player took offense to the act.
That report dropped after NFL insider Josina Anderson alluded to an alleged incident involving Wilkins and a teammate, per an article on The Exhibit.
“Some league sources believe an incident involving a teammate may have factored in-part into the Raiders’ fatigue and release of defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, beyond the management of his foot injury as the reported predominant cause. The Raiders have not officially confirmed an incident or a complaint involving Wilkins and a teammate, while another direct league source confirmed awareness of a situation in which ‘Christian (was) playing around.’”
Last offseason, Wilkins left the Miami Dolphins for the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency and signed a four-year, $110 million deal ($84.75 million guaranteed).
Wilkins was held to just five games last season after suffering a Jones fracture in his left foot.
ESPN's Ryan McFadden provided more details on the matter.
"Based on how Wilkins treated the rehab from his injury, the Raiders voided the remaining $35.2 million of guaranteed money left on his contract on June 4, sources said.
"The belief was that Wilkins needed another surgery on his foot; he went against it, sources told ESPN. The Raiders then voided the guaranteed money left on his deal due to 'failure to maintain his physical condition to play.'
"On Thursday, the NFLPA filed a grievance on Wilkins' behalf. The next step after filing a grievance would be a hearing."
The Raiders are under new leadership this year with general manager John Spytek and head coach Pete Carroll leading the way. Carroll spoke about the matter last Friday.
"We have extremely high expectations. I don't even know any other way to think," Carroll said, per McFadden. "I don't care for what year or team it is; it doesn't matter to me. You're either going for it or you are not.
"We are going for it. And these guys are on board. They get it."
So the Raiders have moved on from Wilkins, as stories about what happened behind the scenes continue. However, it appears Las Vegas will still have a fight on its hands to officially get that money voided after the NFLPA filed a grievance on his behalf.
