Falcons' Darnell Mooney Suffers Shoulder Injury, Will Miss a 'Few Weeks'

Zach BacharJul 25, 2025

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney has suffered a shoulder injury.

A Falcons team official told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Mooney "will miss a few weeks" as he recovers.

Mooney appeared to sustain the injury during Thursday's practice after diving for a pass down the sideline, per ESPN's Marc Raimondi. He subsequently walked off the field with a trainer and did not return.

Mooney appeared in 16 regular-season games with Atlanta in 2024, but missed the team's Week 18 matchup with the Carolina Panthers due to a shoulder injury. It's unknown if he hurt the same shoulder in training camp on Thursday.

The 27-year-old is preparing to enter his second season with the Falcons after spending the first four years of his career as a member of the Chicago Bears.

Mooney served as Atlanta's No. 2 option in its passing attack in 2024, operating as a deep threat and taking the top off opposing defenses while giving Drake London more space to work with in the middle of the field.

In 16 games, Mooney recorded 64 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns while averaging a career-high 15.5 yards per reception.

Until he's able to suit up again, KhaDarel Hodge, Casey Washington and Jamal Agnew are options to replace him in the Falcons' starting offense alongside London and Ray-Ray McCloud III.

Atlanta also signed veteran wideout DJ Chark to a one-year deal on Friday.

It appears unlikely that Mooney will be able to return for the Falcons' preseason opener against the Detroit Lions on Aug. 8, but the team will be hoping that he can be ready for Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 7.
