In April, the NFL updated its list of helmet rules with input from the NFL Players Assocation that included banning seven different models. The Schutt Air XP Pro Q11 LTD, which has been Rodgers' preferred helmet since 2019, was on the updated list of banned headgear.
The league's decision is based on "head impact severity" reviews. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo noted the new helmet Rodgers is not recommended but permitted based on the NFL-NFLPA testing results.
When Rodgers was trying to find a new helmet during mandatory minicamp, he didn't seem thrilled with the choices available.
"I can’t stand the helmet," Rodgers told reporters on June 10. "I’ve worn a Schutt for 20 years and somehow it finally didn’t pass the safety standard."
According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, Joe Flacco, Thomas Morstead and Nick Folk were the only other players who used the same model helmet as Rodgers last season.
Rodgers is entering his first season with the Steelers after signing a one-year deal in June. They will be the third team he has played for in his 21-year NFL career.
The Steelers are hoping Rodgers can get them back to the playoffs and snap their current six-game postseason losing streak. Their last playoff victory was against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round on Jan. 15, 2017.
