Yankees' George Lombard Jr. Reportedly Believed to Be 'Untouchable' amid Trade Rumors

Adam WellsJul 25, 2025

As the New York Yankees explore potential trade deadline acquisitions to help pull them out of a recent rough patch, top prospect George Lombard Jr. is unlikely to be included in any deals they might make.

Per ESPN's Jorge Castillo, the feeling among rival executives is that Lombard is considered "untouchable" in trade talks.

The Yankees have been connected to virtually every hitter rumored to be on the market. Third base, in particular, seems like the position general manager Brian Cashman is primarily focused on.

Oswald Peraza, New York's primary starter at the hot corner this season, is hitting .147/.208/.237 in 168 plate appearances. The Yankees have the eighth-lowest FanGraphs' WAR (0.6) from the third-base spot in 2025.

Per SNY's Andy Martino, the Arizona Diamondbacks have been scouting minor leaguers for the Yankees and New York Mets amid rumors Eugenio Suárez could be dealt.

Even though Suárez is the biggest bat rumored to be on the market, giving up Lombard to acquire him would be an exorbitant cost for a player who is set to become a free agent after this season.

MLB.com has Lombard ranked as the top prospect in the Yankees' farm system and No. 30 overall prospect. The 20-year-old is hitting .242/.379/.377 with five homers and 25 stolen bases in 87 games across two levels. His primary calling card is his defense at shortstop where he projects as a plus player.

The Yankees seem almost certain to take a big swing prior to the July 31 trade deadline as they try to maintain their lead in the AL wild card race and catch the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East.

Since a victory over the Kansas City Royals on June 12 improved their record to 42-25, the Yankees have lost 21 of their last 35 games. They are 4.5 games behind the Blue Jays in the division and own the top spot in the wild card race.
