Travis Hunter to 'Flip-Flop' Between Offense, Defense in Jaguars Camp, HC Coen Says

Mike ChiariJul 23, 2025

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen provided some insight Wednesday into how the team plans to deploy two-way star Travis Hunter during training camp.

Speaking to reporters after the Jags' first training camp practice of 2025, Coen had the following to say about Hunter:

"You want to give him a couple days offense, a couple days defense, and then give him an opportunity to go flip flop within the same practice and then that will kind of become the norm. ... Every moment, every minute that he is in the building, it is accounted for and trying to make sure that we maximize his time, our time so that we can ultimately get the best outcome."

Hunter, who practiced exclusively on offense Wednesday, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft on the heels of winning the Heisman Trophy last season at Colorado thanks to his excellent play at both wide receiver and cornerback.

While Hunter impressed on both sides of the ball during his first season at Colorado in 2023, he took his game to the next level last season.

In 13 games, Hunter registered 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense to go along with 36 tackles, four interceptions and 11 passes defended on defense.

Hunter undoubtedly has a talent to be a superstar at either wideout or corner in the NFL, but during the lead up to the draft, it was unclear if a team would give him the opportunity to play anything close to a full allotment of snaps on both sides of the ball.

After drafting him, the Jags confirmed they planned to use Hunter on both sides of the ball, but Coen told reporters in April that his utilization would be "fluid" with no set number of snaps at a particular position.

Per ESPN's Michael DiRocco, Hunter spent most of OTAs and minicamp learning the complexities of the offense, but he is going to be worked into the defense more moving forward.

Coen said Hunter will spend time on both offense and defense during the same practice at some point during the Jaguars' first six training camp practices, although nothing was said regarding how he may be used during the preseason.

Jacksonville's preseason opener is a home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 9, and it will represent Hunter's first chance to showcase his rare skill set in an NFL game.

The Jags will then face the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 17 and the Miami Dolphins on Aug. 23 before opening the regular season with a home game against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 7.
