On Wednesday, Matos was taken to a hospital in a helicopter after suffering the injury at the end of the practice session, per NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported Matos was surrounded by teammates on the field for more than 10 minutes prior to being airlifted by the helicopter.
His hospitalization wasn't the only injury concern during Wednesday's practice, as cornerback Artie Burns was also seen leaving on crutches and was diagnosed with a torn ACL, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The Dolphins signed Matos, who entered the league as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, as an undrafted rookie last season. He spent the year on the team's practice squad and did not appear in a game.
Matos was born in the Dominican Republic and played baseball growing up. He then played college basketball at New Mexico for two years and the University of South Florida for one year before walking on to the USF football team.
Jackson reported at least 10 other teams outside the Dolphins were interested in Matos before they signed him and guaranteed him $247,500, which was "an unusually high number for an undrafted rookie."
