MLB Trade Deadline 2025 End Date and Fresh Rumors
Front offices around the MLB world are up against the clock to find roster improvements or swap out win-now contributors for long-term assets.
Teams only have between now and the July 31, 6 p.m. ET trade deadline to decide whether they should buy, sell or stand pat and then go about executing those strategies.
As you might expect, then, the baseball rumor mill is bursting at the seams.
To help paint a picture of what this trade season might have in store, let's dissect some of the latest baseball trade buzz.
Mason Miller Not Untouchable?
1 of 3
Athletics closer Mason Miller was considered untouchable this time last season, and things haven't necessarily changed so far.
However, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported, "that stance is subject to change."
Basically, it sounds as if the Athletics have their ears open just in case someone wants to blow them away with a big offer for the ninth-inning fireballer. Miller's 4.00 ERA looks rough on the surface, but his 2.87 FIP suggests he's pitched far better than that mark. Plus, he's still punching out a comical 14.3 hitters per nine innings.
It seems more likely than not that Miller is probably headed nowhere, but it also isn't hard to imagine some front office being enamored with him. A 26-year-old with triple-digit heat who has converted 19 of 22 save opportunities is sure to tempt any team with win-now aspirations and less-than-stellar options in the bullpen.
Guardians Taking Calls on Top Relievers?
2 of 3
The Cleveland Guardians are 10 games back in the AL Central and would have to leapfrog multiple teams to snag a Wild Card spot. It would make sense for them to consider subtractions, even if they like their chances of capitalizing on a soft closing schedule.
And that's apparently exactly what they're doing. Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Guardians "are listening on relievers," including three-time All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase and top setup man Cade Smith.
That said, this situation could be similar to that of the A's with Miller. As Heyman noted, the asking prices on Clase and Smith "are understandably high," and the Guardians "are seen as not too likely to trade either top pen guy."
All of that said, it only takes one bullpen-needy club to get desperate for Cleveland to consider making a move. Clase, who has converted 21-of-25 save chances, has a tidy 2.86 ERA (which is actually the second-highest of his career), while Smith, whose 18 holds are tied for the Majors' 12th-highest, has paired a minuscule 2.00 FIP with a whopping 13.5 K/9.
Mets Dangling Middle Infielders?
3 of 3
The New York Mets, who are locked into a ferocious fight with the Philadelphia Phillies for control of the NL East, could be in the market for a late-July shakeup.
As The Athletic's Will Sammon reported, the Mets "are willing to deal from their major-league infield depth" to bolster their roster elsewhere.
Sammon offered up four potential trade candidates in Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuña. Those four players have just two spots available to them—or one when Jeff McNeil plays the infield—so it would make sense to deal from this position of strength to better balance the roster.
While New York could target several different spots, Sammon noted that beefing up the bullpen is the "main priority." Maybe the Mets become the team with a compelling enough package to pry loose Miller or one of the Guardians' star relievers.
