Mets Reportedly Scouting Bednar, Santana, Clase and More RPs amid MLB Trade Rumors

Zach BacharJul 21, 2025

There are reportedly several relief pitchers on the New York Mets' radar ahead of the trade deadline.

According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Mets have been scouting Pittsburgh Pirates right-handers David Bednar and Dennis Santana, Cade Smith and Emmanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians, Baltimore Orioles relievers Gregory Soto and Félix Bautista, Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan and Seth Halvorsen of the Colorado Rockies.

While Mets closer Edwin Díaz owns a 1.64 ERA and earned an All-Star nod this year, the rest of the team's bullpen has been shaky.

New York's relievers own a 3.90 ERA in 2025, which ranks No. 15 among all MLB teams. The Mets' bullpen has also allowed 39 home runs, tied for the ninth-most in the majors.

Bednar is an intriguing option for New York, as the two-time All-Star has bounced back this season following an inconsistent 2024 campaign. He owns a 2.45 ERA and 1.091 WHIP across 37 appearances while averaging a career-high 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Santana is in the midst of a breakout season, posting a 1.52 ERA in 41 games after entering the year with a career 4.76 ERA.

Acquiring Clase would likely be costly, but he should provide an immediate boost to New York's bullpen. The three-time All-Star is coming off a 2024 season in which he finished No. 3 in American League Cy Young Award voting and owns a 2.86 ERA this year.

The Mets could also search for center field help ahead of the deadline, with Bowden listing Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees outfielder fielder Trent Grisham and Cedric Mullins of the Orioles as possible options.

The 2025 MLB trade deadline will be on July 31 at 6 p.m. ET.
