Guardians Reportedly Would Trade Steven Kwan if 'Overwhelmed and Can Win a Deal'

Timothy RappJul 21, 2025

It remains to be seen if the Cleveland Guardians will be buyers or sellers ahead of the MLB trade deadline on July 31, leaving the future of outfielder Steven Kwan in limbo.

According to The Athletic's Jim Bowden, the Guardians "might consider moving left fielder Kwan, but would deal the three-time Gold Glove Award winner only if they're overwhelmed and can win a deal outright. The Guardians are searching for non-arbitration-eligible, major-league-ready players or hitting prospects on the doorstep of the majors."

Kwan, 27, is hitting .285 this season with six homers, 32 RBI, 43 runs, 11 stolen bases and a .741 OPS. He doesn't provide much pop, but for teams in need of a defensive upgrade in the outfield and a reliable bat near the top of the order, Kwan would undoubtedly make sense as a trade target.

Packaging Kwan and Emmanuel Clase in a deal to a contender could bring back a haul of prospects if Cleveland decides to go that route. With the Guardians just 4.5 games out of the final Wild Card berth, however, the team has a tough decision on its hands as it decides whether to be a buyer or seller.
