Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
After making his return on last week's episode of Monday Night Raw, Roman Reigns reportedly is set for a marquee match at the SummerSlam premium live event on Aug. 2-3 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that internal plans revealed WWE is considering having Reigns face Bron Breakker in a highly anticipated one-on-one match or team with his cousin Jey Uso against Breakker and Bronson Reed. The July 14 episode of Raw ended with Reigns returning to save Uso and CM Punk from a beatdown from Breakker and Reed, potentially making the tag team match more likely.
"A proposed card for SummerSlam from nearly three weeks ago listed Roman Reigns vs. Bron Breakker, (or a tag with Reigns & Jey Uso vs. Breakker & Bronson Reed) that they did the angle for on Raw," Meltzer wrote (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News).
Meltzer also stated that a singles match between Uso and Reed was "briefly discussed," but those plans appear to have changed in the wake of Reigns' return.
It initially appeared that WWE was heading toward a match between Reigns and Seth Rollins, who recently called out The OTC in a promo, but Meltzer suggested that it was a way to create a surprise by booking him against Breakker.
"Rollins’ recent promo on Reigns was a distraction and the Breakker direction was always planned," he wrote.
It remains to be seen if WWE will commit to the tag team match or have Reigns and Breakker face off in a singles contest. Breakker has long been projected as the future of the company, so fans have been wanting to see him challenge Reigns for quite some time. Perhaps now would be the best time to pull the trigger on that match to make SummerSlam even more memorable.
Becky Lynch's SummerSlam Opponent Reportedly Changed
During last week's episode of Monday Night Raw, Lyra Valkyria defeated Bayley in a two-out-of-three falls match to earn the right to face Women's Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch at SummerSlam. However, it sounds like that wasn't always the plan for Lynch at the marquee event.
According to a recent report in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News), it was originally planned that Lynch would face Bayley at SummerSlam before Valkyria's win on Monday.
"An internal proposed card for SummerSlam listed Lynch vs Bayley as the match that was planned," the report stated, adding that the card was created "nearly three weeks ago."
If Bayley ends up missing SummerSlam, it would mark the second straight time that she's been held out of one of WWE's "Big Four" events. She also was removed from the WrestleMania 41 card at the last minute when Lynch replaced her as Valkyria's partner in a Women's Tag Team Championship match.
As members of the famed Four Horsewomen collective dating back to their time in NXT, Lynch and Bayley have a lot of shared history. It seemed like they would have the chance to settle their rivalry next month at SummerSlam, but WWE opted to go with a rising young talent like Valkyria.
Fans will certainly be anxious to see what the plans are for Bayley as SummerSlam approaches, as she remains a popular Superstar who deserves a spot on the card.
Rhea Ripley, Jacob Fatu, Bron Breakker Reportedly Pegged as Next Main Eventers
WWE is reportedly preparing for the future with a new crop of Superstars set to take the next step to the top of the card.
Per Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News, Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE "is focusing on Rhea Ripley, Jacob Fatu, and Bron Breakker as future main event talents."
The reported push to create future main-event stars comes as WWE Champion John Cena nears his retirement at the end of this year. The new crop reportedly will "join the current big names like Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and CM Punk."
Ripley has emerged as one of the faces of the women's division and one of the most popular Superstars on the WWE roster. She is set to challenge Women's World Champion Naomi at SummerSlam in a Triple Threat match that also includes Iyo Sky.
Fatu debuted in WWE just over a year ago and quickly established himself as one of the most exciting acts in the company. Meltzer reportedly stated that Fatu reminds him of "early 1980s Jimmy Snuka, a dangerous heel who is so exciting and unpredictable that the crowd ends up cheering for him."
Breakker's star power has been steadily rising since he recently joined a faction led by Seth Rollins and managed by Paul Heyman. Meltzer reportedly noted that Heyman "has been working with Breakker for a while and is helping prepare him for a bigger role." He also put on a star-making performance in the Gauntlet Match on last week's episode of Monday Night Raw.
It sounds like this trio will be leading WWE into its next era, so it will be exciting to see what the company has in store for them over the next few years.
