Paige Bueckers Says There's 'No Skipping Steps' to Building What Wings Want to Build

Andrew PetersJul 13, 2025

The Dallas Wings selected Paige Bueckers first overall with the expectation that she could bring the franchise its first championship in nearly two decades.

A rough start to the season has indicated that Dallas is still a few years away from competing for titles.

But Bueckers recognizes that building a championship team doesn't happen overnight, and she and her teammates have to embrace that challenge ahead of them.

"There's no skipping steps to building what we want to build here," Bueckers said, per Clutch Points' Joey Mestretta. "This is part of the journey... We are gonna stick together through it."

The Wings, who went 9-31 a season ago, are 6-16 on the year, second-to-last in the league, only ahead of the Connecticut Sun. While far from playoff contention, Dallas is on pace to have a much better season than the 2024 campaign, which is something to celebrate.

The early success of Bueckers is also worth celebrating. She's putting up 18.1 points, 5.4 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game, by far and away the favorite to win Rookie of the Year.

On Sunday against fellow young star Caitlin Clark, Bueckers notched 21 points, though the Wings lost to the Clark's Indiana Fever 102-82.
