Yankees' Max Fried To Have Blister Injury Monitored Through All-Star Break, Boone Says

Taylyn Hadley Jul 13, 2025

New York Yankees pitcher Max Fried’s blistered left index finger will be monitored throughout the All-Star break, according to the Associated Press.

"It's just that [a blister]," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday, per AP. "So he'll be kind of leaning into all the modalities and all of the tricks that you try and do to deal with blisters. Then we'll see how it lines up for what we want to line them up coming out of the break, based on just how that's recovered."

Fried exited the Yankees’ matchup after three innings against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday due to the injury. The Yankees lost 5-2.

Over three innings on Saturday, Fried allowed four runs on 73 pitches and realized something was wrong during the second-to-last pitch he threw to Cubs' Jon Berti in the third inning, as a blister began to form.

“I threw the fastball. I kind of felt it go. I threw the changeup with the next pitch and was able to get out of the inning,” Fried said, per MLB.com's Bill Ladson.

Fried has now been placed on the injured list with blisters four times in his career. Fortunately, the All-Star break gives him time to recover, along with a longer rest window as the Yankees don't start their second half of the season until Friday, July 18, against the Atlanta Braves.

“It’s too early to tell. The good thing is, we have the break and [can] try to do as much as we can,” Fried said, per Ladson. “As far as timelines, I don’t know exactly how this one is going to shake out. A lot of the time, you have to see how it shakes out during the next couple of days.”

"Every case is it's own thing," Fried added, per the AP. "Definitely didn't want to do too much where I wanted to catch it, hopefully before it became a real big, big deal. It definitely was uncomfortable enough to the point where I didn't want to risk more and it was going to affect my pitches. So, yeah, just the next couple of days are going to be big in just being able to evaluate on how long I need."

The ace is 11-3 with a 2.43 ERA this season after stepping up to replace Gerrit Cole, who required season-ending Tommy John surgery. Fried was originally selected to the AL All-Star team but was replaced by fellow Yankee Carlos Rodón.
