Yankees Trade Alex Jackson to Orioles amid 6-Game Losing Streak, Full Return TBD Later

Joseph ZuckerJul 6, 2025

The New York Yankees announced Sunday they traded veteran catcher Alex Jackson to the Baltimore Orioles.

In return, the Bronx Bombers received international bonus pool money and a player to be named later.

For the Orioles, Jackson provides depth behind the plate with Gary Sánchez heading to the 10-day injured list.

Baltimore fans are likely to be a little disappointed because this is another sign that top prospect Samuel Basallo will remain in the minors for now.

Basallo is the No. 11 overall prospect in MLB.com's Top 100 rankings, and he has posted a solid .253/.372/.547 slash line along with 16 homers this year in Triple-A. Still, the organization is going to be patient with the 20-year-old's eventual promotion.

Jackson has yet to appear in a game for the Yankees this season. He made 44 appearances for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, their Triple-A affiliate, and posted a .772 OPS.

The 29-year-old has struggled against MLB pitching the past. Across spells with the Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins and Milwaukee Brewers, he has batted just .132 in 340 career plate appearances.

Trading Jackson is a good piece of business for the Yankees. Even a nominal return means getting something back for a player who wasn't contributing to the active roster.

Baltimore, meanwhile, needs healthy bodies with five of its catchers now on the IL. Some fans are bound to argue, however, that Basallo was a better option to solve the team's momentary injury crisis.
