Nicholas NathansonJul 4, 2025

On Friday, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets to pick up his 21st consecutive win and punch his ticket to the Round of 16 at the All England Club, while top-ranked American Taylor Fritz made light work of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets.

In the women’s draw, Aryna Sabalenka defeated Emma Raducanu, while Lauren Siegemund stunned 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys in straight sets.

Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to keep up his quest for a three-peat at the All-England Club.

Aside from saving two break points in his second service game, the Spaniard was otherwise flawless in the opening set, attacking Struff’s second serve with ease and dominating in lengthy rallies.

In just 27 minutes, Alcaraz had already won the first set 6-1.

But, in the second set, the German realized the only way he had a chance was by being aggressive.

Struff hit 10 more winners (11) than he had in the opening set and came to the net 19 times after doing so just once one set earlier.

While he had to come back from a break deficit, the result paid off, as he broke Alcaraz twice en route to evening the match.

In the third set, Struff came out with the same risk-taking strategy but double-faulted in consecutive points after going heavy on both first and second serves, eventually dropping his first service game.

From there, Alcaraz continued to hold serve, winning 20 of 23 service points to take a commanding lead.

In the fourth set, the five-time grand slam champion took full control, dismantling Struff’s second serve and saving his sole break point to win 6-4.

In the Round of 16, the 22-year-old will face his toughest test yet in Andrey Rublev.

Taylor Fritz Gets His First Straight Set Win At Wimbledon

Day Five: The Championships - Wimbledon 2025
Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1 to reach the Round of 16 at Wimbledon for the second consecutive year.

Fritz began the match by breaking the Spaniard before saving four break points in his first service game to eventually win the set 6-3.

In the second set, Fritz immediately broke again before winning 16 of 19 points on the first serve and committing six unforced errors to take a two-set lead.

In the third set, Fritz continued to play consistent baseline tennis, while his first serve continued to overwhelm Davidovich Fokina.

However, when Fritz was serving for the match at 5-3, Davidovich Fokina finally broke for the first time before holding to even the score at 5-5.

The Spaniard then prevailed in the tiebreaker to send the match to a fourth set.

But Fritz regrouped quickly in the fourth set, winning 6-1 in just 31 minutes to reach the Round of 16.

In total, the fifth seed won 78 percent of points on his first serve, while his consistency continued to stand out.

Fritz committed 27 or fewer unforced errors for the third consecutive match.

The 27-year-old, who has now won 11 of his 12 matches on the grass-court swing this season, will face Jordan Thompson in the Round of 16, looking to reach the quarterfinal here for the third time in four years.

Aryna Sabalenka defeats Emma Raducanu in Thriller

Day Five: The Championships - Wimbledon 2025
Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka faced her first tough test in the third round in Emma Raducanu.

It took just over two hours, but the No. 1 seed prevailed in a 7-6(6), 6-4 thriller.

Raducanu came out hot, forcing a break point in Sabalenka’s opening game, but the 27-year-old held on.

However, Raducanu continued to apply the pressure, finally breaking Sabalenka to take a 4-2 lead.

But Sabalenka countered, eventually leading to a thrilling tiebreaker where Sabalenka emerged victorious.

In the second set, Raducanu once again came out flying, taking a 4-1 lead, but the World No. 1 continued to play a relentless return game, breaking the Brit in consecutive games before serving for the match.

Sabalenka was nearly on the verge of playing a three-set match that would have likely been delayed due to curfew; however, in the end she was able to prevail.

With Madison Keys falling in the third round, Sabalenka’s path certainly opens up, and she should face few troubles en route to the semifinal round.

Madison Keys

Madison Keys’ time at the All England Club has come to an end in the third round, her earliest exit at Wimbledon since 2019.

On Friday, Laura Siegemund stunned the 2025 Australian Open champion 6-3, 6-3, reaching the Round of 16 at a major for just the second time in her career.

The top-ranked American struggled early, thwarting off a break point in her opening game before dropping her next two service games.

Keys double-faulted three times in the opening set, lost all 10 points on her second serve, and committed 16 unforced errors.

The 30-year-old got off to a quick start in the second set, breaking the German right away.

However, her momentum quickly waned as the unforced errors lingered and allowed Siegemund to break in consecutive games before eventually winning the second set 6-3. In total.

Her loss opens up the draw for top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka.

Keys defeated Aryna Sabalenka in this year's Australian Open and has the tools necessary to beat her on the grass-court surface.

But instead, it's Siegemund who moves on in yet another improbable upset to shake up an already chaotic women's draw.

Naomi Osaka Falls In Third Round

Naomi Osaka

On Friday, Naomi Osaka's Wimbledon journey came to an end at the hands of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who defeated her 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Osaka started the match in torrid form, hitting three aces in her first service games before breaking her opponent's serve to take a 3-0 lead.

However, Pavlyuchenkova quickly settled in, breaking back midway through the first set with aggressive baseline play.

After returning the favor in Pavlyuchenkova's next service game, Osaka had two set points on serve before the 34-year-old won consecutive points to bring the game to deuce.

But Osaka worked her way out of trouble with consecutive aces to take a one-set lead.

Pavlyuchenkova opened the second set in even better form, breaking Osaka's first service game before taking a 40-15 lead in the 27-year-old's next service game.

Osaka utilized her powerful serve to get out of trouble again and then broke Pavlyuchenkova before narrowly holding in her next service game to regain momentum in the set.

But Pavlyuchenkova would not go away without a fight, and after saving two consecutive break points, she broke Osaka once again with a number of aggressive second-serve returns to even the match.

In the final set, Pavlyuchenkova broke early and then once again late to secure the comeback victory.

The former World No. 11 has been impressive on second-serve returns, where she has won at least 52 percent of opponents' second-serve points in all three matches.

She has established herself well at the baseline, enhancing her play with impressive net skills.

On Sunday, she will eye her first quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon since 2016.
