Nicholas NathansonJul 3, 2025

Although Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic easily won in straight sets, Wimbledon was once again plagued by the upset bug in the men's draw.

One-time major champion Marin Cilic stunned home favorite and fourth-seed Jack Draper in four sets, while another top-ranked American bowed out as Tommy Paul fell to Sebastian Ofner.

For the first time since 2013, the men's Wimbledon draw has lost two top-five seeds prior to the third round.

In the women's draw, eighth-seed Iga Swiatek won from a set down, defending champion Barbora Krejcikova was taken the distance once again, and Elena Rybakina cruised in straight sets.

Below, we've got you covered with results and top reactions from Thursday's play.

Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner Look Dominant In Second-Round Wins

Day Four: The Championships - Wimbledon 2025
Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic found his best tennis in his 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Daniel Evans.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion dropped just nine total points on his serve, playing an equally signature and relentless-like return game.

The Serbian needed 46 minutes to win the first set, but that was more indicative of Evans' long service games than anything else.

Djokovic created 10 break point opportunities in the opening set, won 90 percent of points on his first serve, and hit 18 winners.

In the second set, the Serbian was even better. He dropped two total points on serve and hit a sole unforced error.

The 38-year-old brought his torrid form into the third set, where he bageled Evans in 31 minutes.

Hours later, top-ranked Jannik Sinner cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Aleksandar Vukic.

Sinner played a flawless first set in which he won 81 percent of points on his first serve while committing just one unforced error.

The Italian faced few challenges in the second set as well, needing 55 total minutes to jump out to a two-set lead.

While Vukic kept things close in the third set, even creating two break point opportunities, Sinner's overwhelming consistency and force proved to be too much.

The three-time major champion committed just 11 unforced errors in victory, while winning at least 69 percent of points on both his first and second serves.

Barring an unexpected result, Djokovic and Sinner are poised to meet in the semifinal.

Marin Cilic Stuns Jack Draper

The Championships - Wimbledon 2025.
Jack Draper

Marin Cilic had not played at Wimbledon since 2021.

Just last August, the one-time major champion was outside the top 1,000 in the ATP rankings.

But, on Thursday, the 36-year-old pulled off an improbable upset, defeating home favorite and fourth-seeded Jack Draper, 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

The 2017 Wimbledon finalist dominated the first two sets with his vintage-like baseline play and consistency.

In less than an hour and a half, Cilic had already built up a two-set lead, winning 29 of 33 points on his first serve while committing just 18 unforced errors.

But Draper would not go away without a fight.

The top-ranked Brit committed only one unforced error and capitalized on the Croat's 39 percent first-serve rate during the 31-minute third set.

The two continued to trade holds in the fourth set until Cilic broke late before serving out the match.

In the end, Draper's lack of aggression cost him the match.

Cilic consistently excels as a baseline player, especially on the grass-court surface where his groundstrokes have maximum impact.

Draper failed to keep him moving, coming to the net just 10 times.

Would the result have been different?

We will never know, but forcing Cilic away from the baseline could not have hurt.

While Draper experienced yet another Wimbledon loss, Cilic will face Jaume Munar in the third round.

August Holmgren Has Our Full Attention

August Holmgren

Very few people outside of Danish tennis circles knew who August Holmgren was entering this week.

After all, aside from the Davis Cup, the 27-year-old lost his only career tour-level main-draw match in 2021 at the San Diego Open against Grigor Dimitrov 6-1, 6-1.

Just to reach Wimbledon's main draw, Holmgren had to overcome one-set deficits in each of his three qualifying matches, including a thrilling five-set final, where he withstood three match points.

But now, the world knows his name.

On Thursday, the World No. 192 staved off three consecutive match points to stun No. 21 Tomas Machac 7-6(5), 6-7(8), 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(5).

As he has all week, Holmgren relied on his first serve, lethal forehand, and dominance at the net.

He won a remarkable 88 percent of points on his first serve, hit 35 aces, sprayed 81 winners, and was highly efficient at the net.

In his Grand Slam debut, Holmgren has won more tour-level matches this week (2) than he had (0) in his entire career (excluding Davis Cup).

By reaching the third round of Wimbledon, Holmgren has earned $208,987—a little less than the $217,156 he has won in his whole career in both singles & doubles combined.

In the third round, Holmgren will face 11-seed Alex De Minaur, who will enter as the overwhelming favorite.

However, Holmgren is playing fearless tennis with no pressure, so another upset cannot be ruled out.

Iga Swiatek Escapes After Early Struggles

Day Four: The Championships - Wimbledon 2025
Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek could not have asked for a better start, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead in the opening set against Caty McNally.

But the American began to control the match with her aggression and stunned the 24-year-old, capturing it 7-5.

Swiatek put the first set behind her and raced out to another 3-0 lead in the second set.

This time, she managed to escape unscathed and level the score.

Then, in the decisive set, Swiatek won 70 percent of points on first serve and saved all five break points en route to a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The four-time major champion was far from her best, committing 36 unforced errors.

But she consistently improved as the match progressed. In fact, 17 of those errors came in the opening set.

In the third round, Swiatek will face Danielle Collins, hungry for revenge after the American stunned her in straight sets at the 2025 Italian Open.

Elena Rybakina Continues To Look Like A Contender

Elena Rybakina

Elena Rybakina needed just 63 minutes to defeat Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-1 and reach the third round at the All England Club for the fifth consecutive year.

The 2022 Wimbledon champion was in complete control early, winning all 10 points on her first serve and launching 13 winners past the Greek in the first set.

Sakkari broke Rybakina's serve to begin the second set, but the 26-year-old quickly countered back with relentless baseline aggression.

From that point, Rybakina gained complete control, breaking Sakkari twice more before ultimately serving out the match.

Her power was evident in her victory, as she won 19 of 21 points on her first serve and hit 23 winners.

In the third round, Rybakina will face No. 23 Clara Tauson in a match where she should dominate.
