The Giants have been stuck in a rut since winning an MLB-high 107 games in the 2021 season. San Francisco went 81-81 in 2022, 79-83 in 2023 and 81-81 last season, Melvin's first after the Giants previously parted ways with skipper Gabe Kapler.
This year's Giants team started hot, going 40-28 through June 11. It's been tough sledding ever since, with San Francisco winning just five of its last 17 games to fall to 45-40. San Francisco has also lost six of its last seven games, including two of three to the 28-56 Chicago White Sox.
Still, the Giants clearly have confidence in Melvin and the coaching staff, as evidenced by their decision to pick up his option.
“I have the most utmost confidence in Bob and the coaching staff,” Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle on Monday. “Whether you’re a player or coach, sometimes there are going to be things that go your way and things that don’t. You make the best decision you can.
“I know for certain that being around Bob and his staff as much as I have been the last five months, they’re very prepared and they’re in great positions to make the right decisions.”
San Francisco will look to break the slump as it continues a 10-game road trip with three more against the Arizona Diamondbacks and three versus the Athletics.
