Wimbledon 2025 Results, Winners, Losers and Highlights from Tuesday's Bracket

Nicholas NathansonJul 1, 2025

The first round of Wimbledon can be characterized by one word: chaos.

Four or more top-10 seeds in the men’s draw lost in the opening round for the first time since 1998.

That number nearly became five before fifth-seeded Taylor Fritz overcame heavy-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard in a five-set thriller.

What if I told you there was even more?

No, I'm not kidding.

For the first time in the Open Era (since 1968), three or more of the top-five seeds in a women's major were defeated in the first round.

Here are the results and top reactions from Tuesday's play.

Jannik Sinner Coasts, Novak Djokovic Plays Long Opening Match

3 of 7
Day Two: The Championships - Wimbledon 2025
Jannik Siner

Jannik Sinner arrived at the All England Club with a determined attitude.

The Italian, who squandered a two-set lead and multiple match point opportunities against Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final, lost against Alexander Bublik in his only tune-up event at the Halle Open, ending a 49-match win streak against players not named Carlos Alcaraz.

On Tuesday, Sinner regained his winning form.

The three-time major champion dominated Luca Nardi in straight sets, behind a surgical 90 percent win rate from his first serve.

He also got back to his trademark consistency that made him so dangerous, committing just 17 unforced errors in a match where he never faced a break point.

It was crucial for Sinner to have this type of start, and he’ll enter his second-round matchup against Aleksandar Vukic as the overwhelming favorite, likely to duplicate Tuesday’s success.

In other action, Novak Djokovic began his quest for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title with a four-set win over Alexandre Muller.

After cruising to a one-set lead in 31 minutes, it appeared the Serbian would coast to victory.

But Muller would not budge, and he saved all 11 breakpoints in the second set before emerging victorious in a tiebreaker.

From that point on, Djokovic regained momentum and won the final two sets with little trouble.

Limiting his time on the court is necessary if the 38-year-old wants to have a serious chance.

Though, it should be noted that Djokovic was absolutely dominant from the first serve, with 22 aces and an 82 percent win rate behind his first serve.

Taylor Fritz Finishes Off The Improbable Comeback

Taylor Fritz

Few players came to Wimbledon in as strong of form as Taylor Fritz.

The top-ranked American entered the All-England Club after lifting titles at both the Boss Open and the Eastbourne Open.

The 27-year-old was taken to the distance before prevailing against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard, who reached the fourth round of Wimbledon last year in his main-draw debut.

Fritz fell into a two-set deficit before launching a furious rally to even up the match.

However, a curfew late Monday forced the match to halt, with a scheduled finish for Tuesday.

Given the interruption, Fritz lost momentum, and the match appeared evenly balanced on Tuesday, with both players continuing to trade holds.

But Fritz found an opening late and capitalized off of Perricard's unforced errors to grab the fifth set 6-4 and pull off the improbable comeback against the heavy-serving Frenchman.

The former US Open finalist could not have asked for a tougher match to begin his Wimbledon campaign.

Unfortunately for him, it's not going to get any easier as heavy-serving Gabriel Diallo awaits in the second round.

Alexander Zverev's Wimbledon Struggles Continue

Day Two: The Championships - Wimbledon 2025
Alexander Zverev

Only Novak Djokovic has more tour-level titles than Alexander Zverev among currently active players.

However, none of Zverev's 23 tour-level titles have come on the grass surface.

And on Tuesday, the top-ranked German experienced disappointment yet again at Wimbledon.

Arthur Rinderknech stunned the world No. 3, earning his first career win against a top-five opponent at a Grand Slam and, in the process, handing Zverev his earliest departure from a major since 2019.

Like Fritz' match, Zverev and Rinderknech were forced to stop after the second set on Monday due to an incoming curfew.

With the match tied at a set apiece, Rinderknech controlled the pace on Tuesday, playing with consistent baseline aggression along with his blistering serve, which rivaled Zverev's.

After losing the third set and trailing by a mini-break at 5-3 in the fourth-set tie-breaker, Zverev found his vintage tennis to force a decisive set.

Zverev was serving at 40-love early in the fifth set; however, Rinderknech stunned the German by winning five consecutive points to grab the break and ultimately win the match.

Grass-court success not only relies on having a powerful serve but also a versatile game.

Zverev was in control of the game when he served at 40-love. But as Rinderknech started returning more aggressively, the German might have benefited from mixing in a serve-and-volley—cutting down reaction time and forcing his opponent to hit tighter angles.

Wimbledon remains the only major where the 28-year-old has not reached the quarterfinal.

Coco Gauff Falls In Upset Of The Tournament

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff came to the All England Club with newfound hope after winning the French Open just last month.

Despite losing her only grass-court match at the German Open, Gauff was regarded as one of the top three favorites to win the tournament.

However, her hopes were dashed on Tuesday by unseeded Dayana Yastremska.

After falling down a break at 5-2, Gauff found her signature tennis and brought the first set to a tie-breaker.

However, Yastremska dominated with aggressive-yet-consistent baseline play to take a one-set lead.

From there, the Ukrainian had full control.

Yastremska broke Gauff three times in the second set, needing 80 minutes in total to win the biggest match of her career.

Yastremska's aggressive approach troubled the second seed throughout the match, one of the main reasons she hit 29 unforced errors and just six winners.

But even more glaring were Gauff's double faults.

After managing to escape Roland-Garros unscathed despite her struggles, Gauff's nine double faults and 45 percent first serve hit rate caught up to her today.

Gauff's shocking loss leaves an opening at the bottom of the draw, one Yastremska can take advantage of if she plays anything like she did today.

Jessica Pegula Stunned In Dominant Fashion

Jessica Pegula

For the first time since 2020, Jessica Pegula has failed to reach the second round of a Grand Slam.

24-year-old Elisabetta Cocciaretto stunned Pegula, limiting the 2022 Wimbledon quarterfinalist to just five total games, becoming the first-ever Italian to beat a top-3 seed at Wimbledon in the Open Era (since 1968).

Cocciaretto dictated the pace early on, breaking Pegula's second service game before rallying around her dominant serve to grab the first set in just 25 minutes.

Both players held serve until 3-3 in the second set, when Cocciaretto broke Pegula in consecutive games to win the match in just 59 minutes.

Pegula entered on the heels of winning a title at the Bad Homburg Open, where she defeated players such as Emma Navarro and Iga Swiatek.

She was widely considered among the top contenders this week.

However, she was only able to get 52 percent of her first serves in and struggled to find consistency, committing 24 unforced errors.

But the biggest difference was Cocciaretto's ball-striking power. The Italian hit blistering groundstrokes and won 33 of 38 points on serve, not even facing a single breakpoint.

The Italian will face 23-year-old Katie Volynets in the second round.
