Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier Named Captains for 2025 WNBA All-Star Rosters Draft
Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx are two of the best players in the WNBA, but they will have the opportunity to try their hand as general managers ahead of the league's All-Star Game.
As the top two vote-getters for the All-Star Game, Clark and Collier were named the captains on Sunday. Clark received 1,293,526 votes from fans, while Collier checked in with 1,176,020 votes from fans.
That means they will draft their respective teams from the list of the other WNBA All-Stars during ESPN's WNBA Countdown on Tuesday, July 8.
It is fitting that Clark is one of the captains, as the actual game will take place on Saturday, July 19, at the home of the Fever in Indianapolis at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
While Clark and Collier were named captains because they were the top vote-getters from the fans, the players and media will also have a say in who will join them as starters in Indianapolis. As the WNBA noted in its announcement of the first fan voting returns, fans account for 50 percent of the vote, media account for 25 percent of the vote and current players account for 25 percent of the vote.
From there, the league's head coaches will determine the 12 reserves, although they are not allowed to vote for their team's own players.
Clark and Collier will then select their rosters by beginning with the other eight starters and then moving to the pool of 12 reserves.
That the Fever and Lynx stars earned the nod comes as anything but a surprise, as they were the leading vote-getters when the WNBA released the first returns. Clark checked in at No. 1 with 515,993, while Collier was close behind at 484,758.
Clark's teammate, Aliyah Boston, was third with 446,961, while three-time MVP A'ja Wilson checked in at fourth with 394,600.
With Clark and Collier now locked in as the captains, speculation can begin about who they will take with their respective first selections. It is a fairly easy guess, though, when it comes to Clark, as the game is in Indianapolis in front of the Fever fans.
The guard taking anyone but Boston would be a shocking development, and the fans in attendance will surely lend their support to that team during the game.
As for Collier, she might look to select Breanna Stewart. Not only is Stewart one of the most accomplished players in the WNBA with three championships and two league MVPs on her resume, she and Collier won an NCAA title when they were teammates at UConn.
What's more, they started the Unrivaled league together and would be quite the impressive one-two punch to deal with during the All-Star Game for Clark's squad.
