Allsports and a dismal Toronto Blue Jays Season

Walt WebbSep 10, 2009

Well there has not been much to write about for sports news or sports on the web concerning the Toronto Blue Jays Major League baseball club. About all that I have said so far this season is that the club should get rid of  J.P. Ricciardi, who’s five year plan, turned into an eight year plan, with little or no improvement or advancement. A season that started with promise and then went right into the toilet, much like their games in the second half. Good start with a crappy finish.

Look no further than what has transpired with Alex Rios as far as Ricciardi not having a clue is concerned. After signing him to a 64 million, six year contract extension in 2008. Things got so bad this year that they ended up putting Rios on waivers, where he was claimed by the Chicago White Sox.

So what could possibly happen in one year to make a player go from star of the future, to someone that you just give away. Looks to Allsports like the only plan Ricciardi has is that he does not have one. He is taking the Blue Jays to ruin and the once proud franchise could be in grave danger.

Last night for example, the Jays were at home playing the Minnesota Twins, there were only 11,159 paid behinds in the seats, the lowest draw ever at the Rogers Center since it’s completion in 1989.

Well at least Baseball fans had something to cheer about last night. Derek Jeter had three hits last night to tie Lou Gehrig for the most hits as a Yankee. Jeter is one of allsports favourite players even though he plays for the hated Yankees. He is a class act and good for the game. When Jeter got his hit to tie Gehrig at 2,721 career hits, he got a standing ovation from the crowd of 45,848 that lasted for 2 ½ minutes.

Jeter was quoted as saying after the game about Gehrig. “He’s one of the classiest people to ever play this game,” I have the utmost respect for him. It’s just kind of mind boggling to have my name next to his.”

The way Jeter is going and remaining healthy, allsports thinks he has a shot at the career hits lead set by Pete Rose AKA “Charlie Hustle”. That number by the way is 4,256.

No Guts No Glory”
