Nikolaj Ehlers, Hurricanes Reportedly Agree to $51M Contract in NHL Free Agency

Julia StumbaughJul 3, 2025

Nikolaj Ehlers is heading to Carolina after ten seasons with the Winnipeg Jets.

Ehlers and the Carolina Hurricanes agreed to a six-year, $51 million contract in free agency on Friday, per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.

The 29-year-old hit free agency after his previous seven-year, $42 million contract with the Jets expired following the 2024-25 season.

Ehlers spent the campaign flanking Vladimir Namestnikov on the Jets' second line, where he ranked fourth on the team with 24 goals and third with 63 points.

He put up that total in just 69 games, good for a career-high 0.91 point-per-game pace.

Ehlers missed time at the end of the regular season and beginning of the postseason with a right foot injury, but returned to post five goals in the Jets' final eight playoff games.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said after his team's second-round elimination by the Dallas Stars that he hoped Ehlers would "be one of those guys who can be a unique Jet-for-life type of player."

Ehlers ultimately decided to test free agency. Instead of sticking around with Mark Scheifele, Neal Pionk and Connor Hellebuyck as another long-term member of the Jets core, he will now look to contend for a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes.

Although he missed significant time due to injury in four of his last five campaigns, Ehlers has scored at a 29 goals-per-season pace over that stretch.

While skating behind Scheifele's top line in Winnipeg, Ehlers saw relatively limited ice time in Winnipeg.

He could see a jump in playing time— as well as potentially in production— if he both stays healthy and gets a chance to skate alongside Sebastian Aho next season.

The Jets originally selected Ehlers with the No. 9 pick of the 2014 draft. He ranks fifth in franchise history in both career goals (225) and assists (295) through 674 regular-season games with the franchise.
