Carlos Alcaraz battled back from the brink to successfully defend his men's singles title at Roland-Garros.

The 22-year-old is now a five-time Grand Slam champion after beating Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2) on Sunday at Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris.

Clocking in at five and a half hours, this was the longest final ever at Roland-Garros and second-longest of the Open Era.

A lot of fans came into the final hopeful of seeing an instant classic. Sinner and Alcaraz were the top two seeds in the men's singles draw, and their encounter in the 2024 semis had gone the distance.

Early on, it looked like everyone would get their wish as neither player could gain much of an edge in the first set. Alcaraz secured the first service break of the match, only for Sinner to return the favor.

Serving at 4-5 in the set, Alcaraz needed the hold in order to avoid falling behind in the match. Instead, he watched helplessly as a backhand effort hit the top of the net and landed wide.

The second set subverted expectations as Sinner jumped out to a commanding 5-2 lead. That sparked a furious comeback from Alcaraz, who claimed the next three games and eventually pushed the set to a tiebreaker.

Sinner ramped up the pressure again as he built an early advantage. He was simply too sharp, with his cross-court forehand on the fourth set point a prime example:

Sinner finally dropped a set in the tournament when Alcaraz won the third. Tennis Channel's Jon Wertheim wondered whether momentum may start to swing in a big way with the contest looking much closer on the balance of the competitors' performance:

Wertheim's assessment is exactly how the final two sets unfolded.

Sinner was 59-2 all time entering Sunday when he won the first two sets, while Alcaraz left himself with almost no margin for error the rest of the way.

Having dropped serve two games earlier, he staved off three match-point opportunities for Sinner when serving at 4-5:

In seemingly no time, Alcaraz went from being dead in the water to completely regaining control when he won the eventual tiebreak.

The decisive fifth set opened with Sinner dropping serve. Suddenly, the lanky Italian was the one looking increasingly unable to find the right answers.

In keeping with the see-saw nature, though, Sinner wasn't out of it just yet. He went from trailing 3-5 to leading 6-5 before Alcaraz forced the tiebreak.

The denouement was ultimately a little anticlimactic as Alcaraz reeled off the first seven in a race to 10 points. But that won't distract from the effort he and Sinner exerted in a matchup that fully lived up to the hype.

Wimbledon is the next stop on this year's Grand Slam schedule, and a finals rematch between Alcaraz and Sinner could be on the cards. Alcaraz is the two-time reigning champion at the All England Club, while Sinner is a 2023 semifinals with quarterfinal trips in 2022 and 2024.

Whether a return bout in London is on top, Alcaraz vs. Sinner certainly looks like it could be a rivalry that defines their era.
