Latest James Cook, Bills Contract Rumors After Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry Deals
Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry landed lucrative deals this offseason, and one young running back is hoping to be next in line for a big contract.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on SportsCenter on Sunday that James Cook and the Buffalo Bills have been in contract talks, but haven't made progress lately.
"He needs a new contract, only 25 years old. He's considered a top eight to 10 running back in this league," Fowler said. "They've had some talks, but it's been quiet of late. So, he's been away from the team during OTAs. Will that continue? Now, these players get fined if they miss minicamp, so depends on your strategy."

Fowler also noted that Cook could use Barkley and Henry's contracts as leverage in his own negotiations.
"But it's going to be interesting because you got Derrick Henry, Saquon Barkley, both got big deals this offseason between $20 million and $15 million per year," Fowler said. "Cook feels like, 'Hey, I'm highly productive and I'm a lot younger than those guys.' So, can they find a sweet spot on the guaranteed money? This offseason will tell."
Cook declined to discuss a potential holdout last month, saying he wanted to "let the business take care of the business."
Cook had a strong third season in 2024, rushing for 1,009 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was tied with Henry and Jahmyr Gibbs for the most rushing touchdowns in the NFL.
The former second-round pick is set to play the 2025 season on the final year of his rookie deal and will earn a base salary of $5.271 million.
Cook, a two-time Pro-Bowler, has shown improvement every year so far and appears on his way to being a top running back in the NFL as long as he avoids injury. Whether the Bills will reward him with a contract fit for a top running back remains to be seen.
