Alex Bregman 'Still Far Away' from Return amid Quad Injury Rehab, Red Sox's Cora Says

Zach BacharJun 7, 2025

Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman isn't close to returning as he recovers from a strained right quadriceps, according to Red Sox manager Alex Cora.

"The progression is going well," Cora said Saturday, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "Let's see how he feels tomorrow and then we'll go from there, and obviously we're still far away from him starting the baseball progression."

Bregman suffered the injury while running to first base after hitting a single during Boston's matchup with the Baltimore Orioles on May 23.

While the two-time All-Star seemingly has some work to do before he's able to come back, he told Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe that his rehab is moving at "warp speed" on Tuesday.

Bregman started a running program on Thursday that will continue through "later next week" after having Sunday off, via ESPN.

He's remained relatively healthy prior to his latest injury, appearing in at least 145 games during each of the past three seasons. Bregman missed 58 games in 2021 due to a strained quadriceps, though.

The 31-year-old was off to a hot start to his 2025 campaign, racking up 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 51 appearances to go along with a .938 OPS.

Boston signed Bregman as a free agent on Feb. 12, handing him a three-year contract worth $120 million.

The Red Sox have struggled in his absence, owning a 4-9 record since his early exit against Baltimore.
