Shohei Ohtani Throws Live BP on Video Ahead of Dodgers vs. Mets Amid Injury Rehab

Taylyn Hadley May 25, 2025

Shohei Ohtani threw a live batting practice session Sunday as he continues his recovery from a shoulder injury, getting in work before the Los Angeles Dodgers faced the New York Mets.

Ohtani remains in the Dodgers’ lineup as a designated hitter while progressing through his throwing program.

Fans and the team have been anxiously awaiting the return of their two-way superstar, and that moment may be closer than ever.

Ahead of the season, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani returning to the mound in May “sounds about right,” per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

Ohtani suffered a labrum tear in Game 2 of the World Series against the New York Yankees last season after an awkward slide while attempting to steal second in the bottom of the seventh inning. He stayed down after landing hard on his shoulder and was eventually walked off the field by trainers.

Despite the injury, Ohtani remained in the lineup for the rest of the series, going 1-for-11 with a walk and a run scored, though he appeared clearly uncomfortable at the plate. The tear was in his left shoulder — his back (non-throwing) arm — which he said did not affect his swing or throwing motion.

“Especially because that would have been [his] throwing shoulder if it was lead shoulder,” general manager Brandon Gomes told reporters during the World Series. “I think the fact that it was back shoulder, non-throwing arm and back arm for swinging, it’s just far less of a concern of how violent any of that would be as opposed to if it were the other one.”

In his return to the plate this season, Ohtani is slashing .296/.378/.642 with 17 home runs, 31 RBI and a 1.020 OPS.
