Justin Verlander Placed on IL with Pec Injury, Will Miss Next 2 Starts for Giants

Paul KasabianMay 21, 2025

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Justin Verlander is going on the injured list with pec discomfort retroactive to Sunday, when he made his last start, per manager Bob Melvin.

Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area relayed more information on Verlander, who will miss his next two starts.

The 42-year-old Verlander has made 10 starts, going 0-3 with a 4.33 ERA (1.40 WHIP). He's struck out 41 batters in 52 innings.

Verlander, a surefire Hall of Famer someday, has enjoyed a tremendous 20-year career. He's a nine-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young winner who also won the 2011 American League MVP award. Verlander has led the majors in strikeouts three times and ERA once.

Unfortunately, injuries have hampered his last two seasons. Shoulder inflammation landed him on the injured list twice during the 2024 season, when he went 5-6 with a 5.48 ERA over 17 starts for the Houston Astros. He also suffered from neck discomfort.

He signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Giants last offseason. It's been a healthy year for Verlander so far, but unfortunately, he'll now miss a few starts.

In the meantime, the Giants are enjoying a solid start to 2025. They have won four of five to go 29-20, good enough for second place in the NL West.
