Richardson is competing with former New York Giants starter Daniel Jones for the role of the Colts' QB1 heading into his third season.

After missing all but four games of his rookie season due to injury, Richardson was intermittently benched during the 2024 campaign.

Richardson ultimately led the Colts to a 6-5 record while throwing more interceptions (12) than touchdowns (eight) and completing 47.7 percent of his passes for 1,814 passing yards.

Jones, who was released by the Giants during his sixth season with the franchise, also struggled during the 2024 campaign.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard said in April that he believed both Richardson and Jones could learn from their struggles last season.

"Sometimes you've got to be bad before you can be good at playing this game," Ballard said in April, per NFL.com's Kevin Patra.

Ballard continued: "I think both of them will be better because of this, and I think the team will be better because of it. You know, competition brings out the best in everybody, and I think we'll see that."

Richardson, who initially won his starting job over Gardner Minshew in 2023, said in April that he wanted to focus on finding "opportunities for myself to be consistent when I am off-balance and make decent throws" ahead of this offseason's competition.

Having Richardson available to show off that development during training camp and preseason reps will be key to helping Ballard, head coach Shane Steichen and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter decide which quarterback will be under center on Sept. 7 for the Colts' Week 1 home game against the Miami Dolphins.

For now, it looks like Jones is clearly in the driver's seat given the opportunities at his disposal.
