NFL Owners Reportedly Removed Shedeur Sanders from Draft Boards, Called QB 'Entitled'

Andrew PetersApr 28, 2025

Shedeur Sanders experienced an unexpected slide to the fifth round of the NFL draft, and that slide reportedly had more to do with his personality than it did with his talent.

Boomer Esiason said on WFAN that the Colorado quarterback hurt his draft stock after he came across as arrogant.

"They took him off because the owners said, 'Take him off. I don't want that guy. I don't want this entitled person on our team,'" Esiason said.

The Sanders family has always been confident, but that approach didn't pay off in the draft process.

"Shedeur Sanders just torpedoed himself," Esiason said. "His attitude off the field, at the combine—his dad didn't help him either. ... When you listen to this kid talk right prior to or at the combine about a 'new culture in your locker room, I'm the guy to do that, I can turn it around.' He's very high on himself, and I think he was very off-putting to many coaches and general managers in the league."

The Athletic's Mike Jones reported Sanders "had an off-putting air that NFL talent evaluators perceived as arrogance and entitlement." According to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, Sanders "more or less sandbagged" interviews with teams he wasn't interested in playing for.

NFL draft insider Todd McShay reported that Sanders didn't have a "professional approach" in his interviews.

Sanders had a tremendous collegiate career, throwing for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns in his final season at Colorado. In the months leading up to the draft, he was widely perceived as one of the top two quarterbacks alongside Cam Ward, who was taken first overall by the Tennessee Titans.

Even on draft night, Sanders was projected to be a first-rounder by Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department.

But the first round came and went. Then the second, third and fourth, and Sanders' name was still on the board. Along with Ward, quarterbacks Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe and Dillon Gabriel were taken ahead of Sanders.

Eventually, the Browns picked him up in the fifth round.

Sanders said in his post-draft conference call on Sunday that rumors about his pre-draft interviews are "a non-factor" now, and he'll look to prove he's more valuable than the fifth-round pick that was used on him.
