Kentucky Derby 2025 Contenders, Favorites and Lineup Odds After Post Positions Draw
The 151st Kentucky Derby is inching closer.
Post positions were revealed during Saturday night's draw, as contenders and favorites were finalized. 2024 winner Mystik Dan previously started from gate No. 3, which now belongs to Final Gambit.
Here's a look at the results of the post position draw and odds for each horse ahead of Run for the Roses on May 3.
The gate that each horse starts from provides an advantage or disadvantage heading into the race. Gate No. 5 has produced 10 Derby winners, the most of any gate.
Gate No. 8 has seen nine champions and horses starting from gate No. 1 have won the race eight times, but the latest victory from the latter starting spot occurred in 1986.
Journalism is a 3-1 favorite in the 2025 Derby after winning the Santa Anita Derby on April 5.
Sovereignty holds the second-best odds at 5-1 to win the Run for the Roses, previously wrapping up a No. 2 finish at the Grade 1 Florida Derby. Sandman is also a contender to win the competition with 6-1 odds.
The 2025 Kentucky Derby contains a purse of $5 million once again. $3.1 million will be for the winner, $1 million will be presented to the runner-up, $500,000 will go to the No. 3 finisher, $250,000 for fourth place and $150,000 for the fifth-place finisher.
The purse was previously $3 million from 2019-23 before rising to $5 million in 2024.
As spectators prepare to descend upon Churchill Downs, post positions were officially set on Saturday.
