Will Howard Lands with Steelers, NFL Fans Discuss Decision to Pass on Shedeur Sanders
The Pittsburgh Steelers finally landed a quarterback on Day 3 of the 2025 NFL draft, selecting Ohio State's Will Howard with the No. 185 overall pick in the sixth round.
Quarterback was arguably the Steelers' biggest need entering the draft with only Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson on the roster, but they turned down opportunities to take a signal-caller earlier.

There was some thought that the Steelers would consider Colorado quarterback with the No. 21 overall pick in the first round, however, they instead took Oregon defensive lineman Derrick Harmon and declined to take a QB with their next three picks as well.
After deciding against taking Sanders at Nos. 83 and 123 overall, he finally went to the rival Cleveland Browns with the No. 144 overall pick in the fifth round.
Following the Steelers' selection of Howard, fans took to social media to debate whether Pittsburgh made the right call in passing on Sanders and taking Howard later:
After playing four seasons at Kansas State, Howard transferred to Ohio State and helped the Buckeyes win a championship last season.
Howard made the most of the immense talent around him, completing 73.0 percent of his passes for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while also rushing for 226 yards and seven scores.
The Steelers still have a ton of question marks surrounding the quarterback position for 2025 since they have yet to receive a firm answer from future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers.
It is widely expected that Rodgers will sign with the Steelers since Pittsburgh is likely the only team that would make him the surefire starter, and the Steelers not taking a quarterback until 185th overall is perhaps a clue that Rodgers is likely to sign.
Until that happens, though, Rudolph is the de facto starter and Howard may be the preferred backup over Thompson.
If and when Rodgers signs, Howard can slide into a developmental No. 3 role, which is likely the best thing for him in terms of learning and possibly having a chance to start down the line.
