Deion Sanders Calls Out 'Laughable' Shedeur Criticism amid 2025 NFL Draft Rumors

Joseph ZuckerApr 23, 2025

Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders called the predraft buzz around his son "silly" as Shedeur Sanders has potentially seen his stock dip ahead of the 2025 NFL draft.

"Most of it is laughable," Coach Prime told USA Today's Jarrett Bell. "What I told him, too, is, 'Son, what I've learned in my life is when it don't make sense, it's God. Because some of this stuff is so stupid, it donโ€™t make sense. That means God is closing doors and opening doors to make sure you get to where youโ€™re supposed to go.'"

Deion also vented about the notion Shedeur could fall to the second round.

"This is venomous," he said. "It's to the point where it ain't even cute no more. It's so predictable. I'm flipping the channel today, listening. 'Jaxson Dart is special; Shedeur Sanders ain'tโ€ฆ' Y'all c'mon. Stop."

Shedeur is the No. 23 overall player and second-best quarterback behind Miami's Cam Ward on the B/R NFL Scouting Department's final big board. Opinions appear to be all over the place in terms of where he'll ultimately be picked, however.

"He could go anywhere from No. 3 to the Giants to the second round," ESPN's Peter Schrager wrote Wednesday in his mock draft.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN wrote how "finding a clear-cut home for [Sanders] is not easy."

"Many teams I've spoken to now expect Sanders to fall out of the top 10, though they also point to an outside chance that the Giants take him at No. 3," he said. "There isn't much momentum that the Saints will take him at No. 9. The Steelers have an appreciation for his game, but with big needs on defense and no second-round pick, they could eschew the position entirely at No. 21."

The Ringer's Todd McShay projected Sanders to be the 33rd overall pick to the Cleveland Browns. He was also absent from the first round in the newest mock draft from NFL Media's Charles Davis.

Sanders threw for 7,364 yards and 64 touchdowns while completing 71.8 percent of his passes at two years with Colorado. He was an efficient passer who could read the field when he had time in the pocket.

The 94 sacks he had raise some questions over his awareness, though, and he's not much of a scrambler, even just from a standpoint of eluding the rush and buying a few more seconds to throw.

As much as he might not like it, Deion is probably a factor at play as well.

The idea that father and son could be a package deal in the NFL got put to bed rather quickly. ESPN's Adam Schefter pointed out that Coach Prime's shadow could nonetheless loom large.

"And then there's this: Short of Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin, any other coach who drafts Sanders better be comfortable with his standing within the organization," the NFL insider wrote. "Because if that team struggles and the fanbase is calling for a coaching change, speculation will start to swirl about Sanders' father taking over."

The good news for the Sanders family and everyone else is that we're only one or two days away from finding out where Shedeur will begin his NFL career.
