Davante Adams References 'Scooby-Doo' Discussing Confusion About Raiders, Derek Carr

Mike ChiariApr 22, 2025

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Davante Adams explained this week how his time with the Las Vegas Raiders quickly soured after his initial excitement to join the team in 2022.

Speaking to Michael Silver of The Athletic, Adams noted that the Raiders' decision to part ways with quarterback Derek Carr just one season into Adams' tenure with the team rubbed him the wrong way, saying:

"If I was Scooby-Doo, I would've went, 'Urrrrrrrrrrr?' Like, you literally brought me here, you knew the reason why … me going there for Derek; everybody in the world knew that. And then to be in a situation where now you just pull him from me after we had a very productive year? That was the first kind of confused moment that I had."

Adams spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers, earning five Pro Bowl nods and two First Team All-Pro selections along the way.

His desire for a new contract led the Packers to trade Adams to the Raiders in 2022, and it also resulted in Adams reuniting with his college teammate at Fresno State in Carr.

Carr and Adams had a great connection in their one and only season as NFL teammates, with Adams recording 100 catches for 1,516 yards and 14 touchdowns en route to Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro honors.

However, the Raiders benched Carr late in a season that saw them go just 6-11 and then released him during the ensuing offseason, leading him to join the New Orleans Saints as a free agent.

The Raiders signed veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in an effort to replace Carr, but he struggled and got benched in favor of then-rookie Aidan O'Connell, while head coach Josh McDaniels was fired eight games into the 2023 campaign.

Adams addressed the sweeping changes he endured in 2023 and into last season, saying:

"And then things continued that next year … obviously what they decided to do and some of the moves they decided to make on offense. And things continued the next year again. [Initially], I was trying to feel good about it, more than actually what I was presented with—just the facts of who's the head coach, who's my receiver coach, who is the offensive coordinator, who's calling plays, what the defense looks like, all that stuff.

"Once we got to [2024], it was just a lot of the same. And it was just clear to me that we weren't being set up to be put in a situation where we could really go and win at a convincing rate. And it was time for me to go."

In an effort to resuscitate their season, the New York Jets acquired Adams in a trade with the Raiders last season, reuniting him with his former Packers quarterback in Aaron Rodgers.

Adams finished 2024 with 85 receptions for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns, continuing his streak of five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, but things weren't any better from a team-wide perspective in New York, as the Jets went just 5-12.

The Jets cleaned house, firing their head coach and general manager, while also releasing both Adams and Rodgers.

While Rodgers is still deciding what he wants to do, Adams signed a two-year, $44 million contract with the Rams last month, replacing Cooper Kupp as the starter across from Puka Nacua.

The Rams have reached the playoffs in four of the past five seasons and have an established quarterback in Matthew Stafford, so the organization should be able to offer Adams far more stability than what he had in Vegas.
