Davante Adams Reveals 'Shocking' Aaron Rodgers Phone Call After Jets' Decision

Mike ChiariApr 22, 2025

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Davante Adams divulged this week that the New York Jets' handling of quarterback Aaron Rodgers' departure contributed to his decision to go elsewhere as well.

Speaking to Michael Silver of The Athletic, Adams noted that he was taken aback by how the Jets treated Rodgers after hearing a firsthand account of Rodgers' final meeting with the Jets from his longtime friend and quarterback:

"We golfed together on a Wednesday in Vegas, at Shadow Creek, and then [Rodgers] told me he was going to [meet with the Jets] on Thursday and then come back and we'd play again Friday. And he was just in such a bad mood [after the meeting] that he hit me up and was like, 'I'm not coming back, bro.' He's like, 'This was horrible; they just disrespected me completely.

"I thought he was being a little dramatic at first. I'm like, 'Bro, don't paraphrase it. How did he say this?' [But] that's how he said it. And I was shocked because I didn't think anybody had the balls to, for lack of better words, to hit him with it like that. Just flat out—'Yeah, I think we're just gonna do something different. We're gonna move in a different direction.' It was shocking, but right from that moment, I knew there was no chance that I'd be back there."

Last week, Rodgers appeared on the Pat McAfee Show (h/t ESPN's Brooke Pryor and Rich Cimini) and described the meeting he had with new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey back in February.

Rodgers said he didn't feel he was given "an ample amount of respect" during the meeting, adding:

"I figured that when I flew across country on my own dime that there was going to be a conversation. And the confusing thing to me—and the strange thing—was when I went out there, I meet with the coach, we start talking, he runs out of the room. I'm like, 'That's kind of strange.'

"Then he comes back with the GM and I'm like, 'All right.' So, we sit down in the office, and I think we're going to have this long conversation. I've flown across the country and, 20 seconds in, he goes ... 'So, do you want to play football?' And I was like, 'Yeah, I'm interested.' And he said, 'We're going in a different direction at quarterback.'"

Both Rodgers and Adams were subsequently released, and while Adams signed a two-year contract with the Rams last month, Rodgers is still weighing his options.

Rodgers and Adams were teammates with the Green Bay Packers for eight years before Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Then, after a slow start last season, the Jets acquired Adams in a trade with the Raiders, pairing him up with Rodgers once again.

That did not translate to winning football, as the Jets went just 5-12, fired their head coach and general manager and made sweeping changes to the roster, including cutting Rodgers and Adams.

Rodgers is a four-time NFL MVP, one-time Super Bowl MVP and a surefire future Hall of Famer, but his time in New York couldn't have gone much worse, and he may now be down to a choice between retirement or signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in an effort to extend his career by one more season at the age of 41.
