Saints Reportedly 'Still Like' Spencer Rattler amid Derek Carr, Shedeur Sanders Rumors

Adam WellsApr 18, 2025

Amid all of the uncertainty around the New Orleans Saints' quarterback room right now, Spencer Rattler's presence on the roster could impact their approach to addressing the position leading up to the 2025 NFL draft.

Per ESPN's Matt Miller, the Saints "still like" the ability and upside Rattler offers one year after selecting him with a fifth-round pick.

Miller pointed out the front office that drafted Rattler, led by general manager Mickey Loomis, is still running the Saints. They do have a new head coach in Kellen Moore, but the key decision-makers remain in place.

As for what the Saints might do with the No. 9 pick, several options appear to be on the table. This includes quarterbacks like Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough.

In the same ESPN article, Field Yates did note there are people around the NFL who think it's "possible" that Dart or Shough will be taken ahead of Sanders as the second quarterback off the board after Cam Ward.

Following the April 11 report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that Derek Carr's status for the 2025 season is uncertain due to a shoulder injury, the connection between the Saints and Sanders gained steam.

B/R's NFL scouting department actually projected the Saints to trade up with the Las Vegas Raiders for the sixth overall pick to select Sanders in its three-round mock draft that posted on April 15.

If there's a potential spoiler option, Dart could be gaining steam for New Orleans' decision-makers. The MMQB's Albert Breer said on Wednesday that the Saints have done a "ton of work" on Dart but that they may try to draft him later and not necessarily with the ninth pick.

The Saints' roster is in such dire straits right now that they could easily justify taking whoever the best player on their board is at No. 9, whether or not it's a quarterback, and feel good about the decision.

Rattler doesn't seem like he's ready for a full-time starting role in the NFL after his rookie season. The 24-year-old threw for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions in seven games, including six starts.

New Orleans scored a total of 74 points in the six games Rattler started (12.3 points per game). The Saints finished the 2024 season with a 5-12 record, their worst mark since 2005 (3-13).
