Three of the best NHL players from this generation got together to celebrate Alex Ovechkin becoming the league's all-time leading goal-scorer.

Following the Pittsburgh Penguins' 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night, Ovechkin was gifted a Rolex watch by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Ovechkin did score in the loss, giving him 897 for his career and 44 this season. He surpassed Wayne Gretzky's mark of 894 goals on April 6.

Prior to puck drop on Thursday night, the Penguins honored Ovechkin with a video tribute congratulating him on passing Gretzky.

Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters after the game about the joy of being able to watch Ovechkin and Crosby play in the NHL at the same time:

"[Crosby and Ovechkin] are two of the greatest players of all time. How fortunate are we that we get to see it up close and have for how many years now? The fact that they play in the same division is incredible because that rivalry between Washington and Pittsburgh, and between Ovi and Sid, has been so much fun just to witness up close."

Crosby was also involved in the outcome on Thursday night, scoring in the second period to give the Penguins a 3-1 advantage.

Thursday marked the 73rd all-time meeting between Ovechkin and Crosby since the 2005-06 season. The Penguins have a 42-27-4 record in those games. Ovechkin has a 38-33 advantage in goals, but Crosby has the 95-68 edge in points.

This was also the 11th time both players have scored goals in the same game.

There was nothing at stake in terms of playoff positioning for the two teams in the regular-season finale. The Capitals wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference on April 10. Pittsburgh was officially eliminated from playoff contention on April 6.

Ovechkin and the Capitals will open the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Monday when they host the Montreal Canadiens in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first round series.
