MLB Power Rankings as Shohei Ohtani's Dodgers Lose No. 1 Spot, Jays, Guardians Rise

Zachary D. RymerApr 14, 2025

With 10 percent of the 2025 MLB season accounted for, something that would have been unthinkable at the outset is now suddenly plausible.

Maybe the Los Angeles Dodgers aren't unstoppable, after all.

There's obviously a lot of season left, but this week marks the first time that the defending World Series champions are not in the No. 1 spot in our weekly power rankings. Their upside remains sky-high, but the reality is they haven't played good baseball since starting out 8-0.

It's another team from the National League West on top, and deservedly so after becoming the first team in MLB to 10, 11 and 12 wins. This week's update is otherwise notable for two American League contenders that plummeted down the rankings.

Just as a reminder, this exercise is purely for entertainment purposes. And since the season is still in small sample size territory, this week's update isn't exactly a set-in-stone assessment of the league. Things are fluid, to say the least.

With all this said, let's get into it.

Nos. 30-28

1 of 12
COLORADO ROCKIES VS MILWAUKEE BREWERS, MLB
Michael Toglia

30. Colorado Rockies (3-12)

Previous Rank: 29
Last Week: 1-2 vs. MIL, 0-3 @ SDP

Nobody is surprised to see the Rockies at the bottom of the MLB standings, much less at the bottom of this list. And while it is only fair to note that conditions have been frigid, it's still not a good look that the team that plays at Coors Field is scoring only 2.7 runs per game. A third straight 100-loss season is only 88 losses away.

29. Chicago White Sox (4-11)

Previous Rank: 30
Last Week: 0-3 @ CLE, 2-1 vs. BOS

An eight-game skid had the White Sox on track to bring up the rear once again in these rankings, but you have to hand it to them for blowing off some steam against the other Sox over the weekend. They've also been more competitive than their record suggests, mainly by way of a solid pitching staff with a 3.55 ERA.

28. Minnesota Twins (5-11)

Previous Rank: 24
Last Week: 1-3 @ KCR, 1-2 vs. DET

For anyone scoring at home, the Twins are now 17-38 dating back to August 18, 2024. Heck, they've already had three separate losing streaks of at least three games this season. And as much as we'd like offer some hope, it's hard to do so after another dismal offensive week (7 G, 20 R) that also saw Pablo López land on the IL.

Nos. 27-25

2 of 12
San Diego Padres v Athletics
Tyler Soderstrom

27. Pittsburgh Pirates (5-11)

Previous Rank: 28
Last Week: 2-1 vs. STL, 0-3 @ CIN

Paul Skenes had a rough one on Tuesday, surrendering five earned runs for the first time in his young career. But at least the Bucs managed to win that series, whereas their timbers were shivering in Cincinnati over the weekend. They scored five runs in the series, culminating in a Hunter Greene-led shutout loss on Sunday.

26. Athletics (6-10)

Previous Rank: 22
Last Week: 1-2 vs. SDP, 1-2 vs. NYM

The Athletics haven't been enjoying Sutter Health Park all that much in 2025, dropping seven of their first nine and posting a 5.89 ERA in their new Sacramento home. The best thing they have going for them right now is Tyler Soderstrom, who already has two multi-homer games and six total for the season.

25. Washington Nationals (6-9)

Previous Rank: 25
Last Week: 2-1 vs. LAD, 1-2 @ MIA

All aboard the James Wood hype train! The sophomore outfielder has a .978 OPS and five homers, including three against the Dodgers early last week. Now all the Nationals need is for some of that energy to rub off on rookie Dylan Crews, who hasn't been able to buy a hit (.116 AVG) through his first 12 games.

Nos. 24-22

3 of 12
MLB: APR 11 Phillies at Braves
Marcell Ozuna

24. St. Louis Cardinals (7-8)

Previous Rank: 23
Last Week: 1-2 @ PIT, 2-1 vs. PHI

After losing back-to-back-to-back series following an opening sweep of Minnesota, the Cardinals badly needed the series dub they got against the Phillies over the weekend. Injuries will make it hard to keep the momentum going, though, as they've lost Iván Herrera and Masyn Winn to the IL in the last week.

23. Miami Marlins (8-7)

Previous Rank: 26
Last Week: 1-2 @ NYM, 2-1 vs. WAS

It remains difficult to look at the Marlins and see a good team, but they've been way more entertaining than anyone could have predicted. Just as an example, go watch Dane Myers' game-ending catch from this week if you haven't already. Yet with five straight series against contenders on deck, they're staring down a tough test.

22. Atlanta Braves (4-11)

Previous Rank: 21
Last Week: 2-1 vs. PHI, 1-2 @ TBR

The Braves began this year as a World Series favorite, so we remain reluctant to put a lid on their coffin, much less nail it shut. But save for Spencer Schwellenbach and Marcell Ozuna, this is an ineffective team right now. It'll be a relief when they activate Spencer Strider, who struck out 27 of 51 batters during his rehab assignment.

Seattle Mariners v Texas Rangers

Nos. 21-19

4 of 12
Pittsburgh Pirates v Cincinnati Reds
Hunter Greene

21. Tampa Bay Rays (7-8)

Previous Rank: 18
Last Week: 1-2 vs. LAA, 2-1 vs. ATL

The Rays were on a five-game losing streak through Tuesday, but they managed to save some face by winning three of five to finish off their week. They're getting good starting pitching (3.14 ERA) even with Shane McClanahan still on the sidelines, and they're actually enjoying Steinbrenner Field to the tune of a 7-5 record at home.

20. Baltimore Orioles (6-9)

Previous Rank: 13
Last Week: 1-2 @ ARI, 1-1 vs. TOR

The Orioles are still ostensibly a contender in the AL East, but sticking up for them right now isn't much easier than sticking up for the Braves. The O's have yet to win back-to-back games this season, and the starting pitching issues we all tried to warn them about have manifested in a 5.30 ERA.

19. Cincinnati Reds (8-8)

Previous Rank: 27
Last Week: 2-1 at SFG, 3-0 vs. PIT

Sweeping the Pirates at home isn't necessarily a world-changing event, but it was a nice cap on a week that basically flipped the narrative upside down for the Reds. It all comes down to a pitching staff that is off to a terrific start, posting a 2.87 ERA and league-leading 2.9 fWAR as of Sunday afternoon.

Nos. 18-16

5 of 12
Texas Rangers v Seattle Mariners
Cal Raleigh

18. Houston Astros (7-8)

Previous Rank: 15
Last Week: 1-2 @ SEA, 2-1 vs. LAA

Last week could have been a good one for the Astros, but they just had to go and let Randy Arozarena (literally) walk all over them in Seattle. At least they started to get their offense going, scoring 33 runs in six games overall and 22 in their series victory over an Angels team that had come into Houston hot.

17. Kansas City Royals (8-8)

Previous Rank: 16
Last Week: 3-1 vs. MIN, 1-2 @ CLE

Consecutive series victories against the Orioles and Twins got the Royals to 7-6, but wins against those clubs move the needle only so much. And of the things that are evident after a series loss in Cleveland, nothing sticks out as much as the Royals needing to power up their offense. They have just eight home runs as a team.

16. Seattle Mariners (8-8)

Previous Rank: 20
Last Week: 2-1 vs. HOU, 3-0 vs. TEX

The Mariners had a brutal week on the injury front, losing Victor Robles and Ryan Bliss for the foreseeable future. Yet they won both of their series, and against key AL West rivals no less. We know they're going to pitch—especially you, Logan Gilbert—and key hitters like Arozarena, Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh are warming up.

Nos. 15-13

6 of 12
MLB: APR 12 Royals at Guardians
Emmanuel Clase

15. Boston Red Sox (8-9)

Previous Rank: 9
Last Week: 1-3 vs. TOR, 1-2 @ CHW

Garrett Crochet flirted with a no-hitter on Sunday, allowing the Red Sox to escape the South Side without being swept. There's nonetheless no hiding that this was an ugly week for Boston, and especially on the offensive side with 14 runs in seven games. Nobody needs to wake up more than Triston Casas, who has a .550 OPS.

14. Texas Rangers (9-7)

Previous Rank: 5
Last Week: 1-2 @ CHC, 0-3 @ SEA

The Rangers came out of last week at 8-2 and riding a five-game win streak. This week cut them down to size in a big way, and the optics are just as bad as the results. An offense with a .267 OBP really couldn't afford to lose Wyatt Langford to the IL, and let's be blunt about it: Jacob deGrom doesn't look the same.

13. Cleveland Guardians (8-7)

Previous Rank: 17
Last Week: 3-0 vs. CHW, 2-1 vs. KCR

The Guardians came out of last week at just 3-6. But then came a five-game win streak that didn't stop until Cole Ragans sank his teeth into them on Sunday. Yet even though the bullpen has a 2.25 ERA as a whole, it's still jarring to see Emmanuel Clase with more earned runs on his line (six) than he had in all of 2024 (five).

Nos. 12-10

7 of 12
Arizona Diamondbacks v Washington Nationals
Corbin Carroll

12. Milwaukee Brewers (8-7)

Previous Rank: 11
Last Week: 2-1 @ COL, 1-2 @ ARI

After winning seven of eight, the Brewers cooled down with losses in three of four to close out their week. Otherwise, let's pause to admire the delightfully weird hotness of Jackson Chourio. His OBP (.288) is lower than his batting average (.292), but that's OK when a guy has 12 extra-base hits and 17 RBI through 16 games.

11. Arizona Diamondbacks (9-7)

Previous Rank: 12
Last Week: 2-1 vs. BAL, 2-1 vs. MIL

The Diamondbacks keep stalling out when they threaten to get hot, but that eventuality is still worth waiting on. They remain especially dangerous on offense, particularly when Corbin Carroll is in the middle of the action. It would be nice to see him stealing bases again, but nobody minds a 1.123 OPS and 12 extra-base hits.

10. Toronto Blue Jays (9-7)

Previous Rank: 19
Last Week: 3-1 @ BOS, 1-1 @ BAL

The Blue Jays put on a heck of a pitching display at Fenway Park, allowing seven runs in four games. That has been the story of their season so far, and it's helping to sustain the team while the offense finds its footing. The Blue Jays have just eight homers, including none by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. This is arguably the scary part, as those two won't stay down for long.

Nos. 9-7

8 of 12
Los Angeles Angels v Houston Astros
Mike Trout

9. Los Angeles Angels (9-6)

Previous Rank: 14
Last Week: 2-1 @ TBR, 1-2 @ HOU

There's still a "too good to be true" vibe hanging over the Angels, but losing two of three to Houston marked only their first series defeat of the season. Their offense continues to be a major surprise with a league-leading 30 home runs, with Mike Trout at six and Taylor Ward, Logan O'Hoppe and upstart star Kyren Paris at five apiece.

8. New York Yankees (8-7)

Previous Rank: 6
Last Week: 1-2 @ DET, 1-2 vs. SFG

The Yankees got off to a homer-fueled 6-2 start, but they have since lost five of seven. This mostly springs from a starting rotation that has a league-worst 5.40 ERA, though it doesn't help that Aaron Judge is going through one of his cold spells. Since April 5, he has no homers and has driven in only three runs in eight games.

7. Detroit Tigers (9-6)

Previous Rank: 10
Last Week: 2-1 vs. NYY, 2-1 vs. MIN

Should the Tigers have swept the Twins? Yeah, probably. But they just keep winning series, as that's now four in a row since a season-opening sweep in Chavez Ravine. Spencer Torkelson continues to be a late-blooming No. 1 pick, as he has a 1.082 OPS and picked up his fifth homer on Sunday.

Nos. 6-4

9 of 12
New York Mets v Athletics
Kodai Senga

6. New York Mets (10-5)

Previous Rank: 7
Last Week: 2-1 vs. MIA, 2-1 @ ATH

He's getting on base (i.e., .409 OBP) about as frequently as one would expect, but the Mets are still waiting on Juan Soto to truly bust out. Carrying the team in the meantime is a pitching staff with (by far) the best ERA in MLB at 2.30. Whatever the Mets are paying pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, it's not nearly enough.

5. Philadelphia Phillies (9-6)

Previous Rank: 3
Last Week: 1-2 @ ATL, 1-2 @ STL

The Phillies are 3-5 since getting off to a 6-1 start, and it suffices to say Kyle Schwarber could use some help on the offensive side. Whereas he has six homers, nobody else has more than two. Still, help should come eventually and it's not surprising that pitching (3.52 ERA) is sustaining the Phillies in the meantime.

4. Chicago Cubs (11-7)

Previous Rank: 8
Last Week: 2-1 vs. TEX, 2-1 @ LAD

The Cubs had a huge blow on Sunday with news that Justin Steele will miss the rest of the year after elbow surgery. All the same, their lineup may be keen to carry the team to the playoffs. They have MLB's highest scoring offense at an average of 6.44 runs per game, and that's with a handful of key bats still not quite warm.

Nos. 3-1

10 of 12
MLB: APR 13 Giants at Yankees
Jung Hoo Lee

3. San Francisco Giants (11-4)

Previous Rank: 4
Last Week: 1-2 vs. CIN, 2-1 @ NYY

Dropping that series to the Reds took some shine off the Giants, who had won seven in a row and eight of nine to open the year. Taking two of three from the Yankees restored some of it, and nobody had a better time in the Bronx than Jung Hoo Lee. He homered three times and is now batting .352 with 12 extra-base hits.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers (11-6)

Previous Rank: 1
Last Week: 1-2 @ WAS, 1-2 @ CHC

The Dodgers remain MLB's best team on paper, but a little less so now that Blake Snell is on the IL with shoulder inflammation. The team is otherwise 3-6 since its 8-0 start, with a perfectly even run differential (74 runs, 74 runs allowed) for the season. With the strongest possible clarification that we're only talking about right now, the Dodgers look human.

1. San Diego Padres (13-3)

Previous Rank: 2
Last Week: 2-1 @ ATH, 3-0 vs. COL

Are the Padres really this good? One suspects not, but it's a good omen that the only other 13-3 start in their history resulted in a trip to the World Series. Injuries to Jackson Merrill and Jake Cronenworth are testing their offensive depth, but all they have to do is get a lead to the bullpen. It has been able to take it from there, posting a 1.51 ERA with eight saves in eight tries.

Stars of the Week

12 of 12
Los Angeles Dodgers v Washington Nationals
James Wood

Hitter of the Week: James Wood, Washington Nationals

Stats: 6 G, 7-for-21, 1 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 7 R

If Wood wasn't already on your radar, he should be now. He spearheaded Washington's wins over the Dodgers on Monday and Tuesday with three homers and seven runs driven in. And on Friday, he hit one of those "How did he hit that out?" homers against Miami with a 110.5 mph, 400-foot poke the other way.

Pitcher of the Week: Hunter Greene, Cincinnati Reds

Stats: 2 GS, 15.2 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 0 R, 15 K

Greene landed at No. 1 on MLB.com's starting pitcher rankings on Thursday, which felt like recency bias after a brilliant outing against the Giants. But then he had another one on Sunday against Pittsburgh, and it's fair to say he's on one in April. Each of his three starts has lasted at least seven innings and he's given up only one run.

Rookie of the Week: Jacob Wilson, Athletics

Stats: 6 G, 8-for-24, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 5 R

Wilson finally had an 0-fer on Sunday, his first of the season after 15 straight games with at least one hit. He's already rubbing shoulders with Luis Arraez and Steven Kwan as one of the game's best pure hitters, as he's struck out only twice and made contact on 95 percent of his swings.
