Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence Optimistic He'll Be Ready for Week 1 After Surgery on Injury

Julia StumbaughApr 9, 2025

Trevor Lawrence said Wednesday he is "very optimistic" he will have recovered from December shoulder surgery in time for Week 1 of the 2025 season.

"There's not really a set deadline on it, just because we don't play a game until this fall. Obviously, I'm going to be ready sooner than that, so I'm very optimistic I'll be perfectly good for the season," Lawrence said at the 39:00 mark of Wednesday's press conference.

Lawrence confirmed that he is already throwing and working to progress to deeper and higher-volume throwing.

"I think just kind of pacing ourselves as OTAs go, and working myself to where I'm in shape as far as throwing," Lawrence continued. "I guess the amount of throws might be a little lighter to start, and work our way up... I imagine that, and then maybe just some handoff stuff, will be a little limited. But besides that, I think, that won't last too long."

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen confirmed that Lawrence would be "on a pitch count" as his rehab progresses this spring.

"He's been working on it himself right now, in terms of monitoring that with the doctors... Everything's moving forward. He feels really good right now, so excited about that," Coen said.

Lawrence was placed on IR after suffering a concussion in Week 13 of the 2024 season. He subsequently underwent surgery on an AC joint sprain that had limited him since Week 9.

When addressing reporters for the first time since the surgery in a Jan. 9 press conference he attended with his left arm in a sling, Lawrence said he hoped to be ready to return in time for the season as well as "most OTAs."

"I'm going to be smart with it, and not rush into OTAs too quickly, but it's not going to really affect too much of the offseason, and hopefully I'll start being able to train in the next couple months," Lawrence said in January.

The Jaguars' latest updates are positive indication Lawrence is still planning on sticking to that return timeline.

Lawrence finished last season having completed 60.6 percent of his passes while throwing for 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions. Three of those picks occurred in the two games during and after Lawrence suffered his AC joint sprain. The Jaguars will hope that allowing time for his offseason recovery will lead to a boost in accuracy when he returns next fall.
