Trey McBride Jokes $76M Contract Had Clause Banning Hurdles, 'I'm Trying to Stop'

Taylyn Hadley Apr 7, 2025

Arizona tight end Trey McBride joked that his new four-year, $76 million contract extension came with an unofficial clause banning him from hurdling defenders.

"That was the top of the page, I think," McBride said, per AZ Cardinals' Darren Urban. "I don't want to be recognized for that... I'm trying to stop. I don't want to jump over people. I told myself I'm not going to do it anymore. We'll see how long that lasts."

The 6'4" tight end has made hurdling defenders a signature move, using his height and athleticism to vault over opponents and often land on his feet to keep the play alive.

Still, coaches, teams and training staff tend to cringe at the sight—having star players airborne with only the ground to break their fall poses obvious risks. And that’s something McBride understands.

In addition to the injury risks, he has started to notice defenses catching on to his signature move. During a 47-24 win over San Francisco in January, he hurdled Ji'Ayir Brown—who didn't even go low—and still managed to pick up a first down. It was then McBride realized the element of surprise might be wearing off.

"I was in the air, and I was like 'Uh oh, this is not good,'" McBride said after the game, per Zach Gershman of the team's official website. "I really need to stop. I'm tired of it and obviously they're catching on to it as well, so I don't know if I plan on hurdling."

McBride's instincts often take over, and he's continued to add to his hurdle highlight reel. But with a $76 million price tag heading into the 2025 season, he'll be thinking twice before taking flight.
