Tom Brady 'Loves' Geno Smith's Game, Invited QB to His House After Raiders Trade

Timothy RappApr 7, 2025

Geno Smith told SI.com's Albert Breer that he met with Las Vegas Raiders' minority owner Tom Brady at the NFL legend's Miami home and discussed a number of topics, including football, longevity and what it takes to be a quarterback.

"We sat and talked for hours," he said. "You're sitting there, you're like, 'Man, it's Tom Brady.' But then, again, I mean, he's got a hand in the organization that I'm playing for. There's a lot of responsibility there."

The two had previously spoken on a FaceTime call, discussing how Smith had continued to evolve into his 30s, something Brady admired.

"I've always really been hard on myself about being able to play the game without using all the physical attributes," Smith told Breer. "And from watching my tape, that's something that he noticed, how I handle protections and can get in and out of plays. We ran a very intricate system [last year]. It was our first year in the system, but we didn't hold back on anything. And I think that's something that he recognized, he noticed. ... "Stuff from the neck up, decision making, leadership, just all those things are the things that Tom talked to me about reasons why they wanted me."

The Las Vegas Raiders have had a lot of turnover this offseason. Pete Carroll is the new head coach. John Spytek was appointed as general manager. Chip Kelly is taking over as offensive coordinator. Smith will now be under center after reviving his career with the Seattle Seahawks.

Last season wasn't his best, however. The two-time Pro Bowler threw for 4,320 yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, taking 50 sacks while completing 70.4 percent of his passes. It was his first year with a new coaching staff after Caroll parted the team following the 2023 season, and it had its ups and downs, as the 10-7 Seahawks missed the postseason.

But now, after being traded to the Raiders and signed to a two-year, $75 million extension, Smith is ready to be reunited with Carroll and help turn the Raiders around.

"What I was talking to Tom about, this is something he said, and this is true: We don't want to celebrate contracts. We want to celebrate wins," Smith says. "And the thing is, that just kind of set the tone for the team. This is our quarterback. This is the direction we're headed. And there's no gray area there. Everything's set in stone. And when you have that, when you can set a real plan, then you can get things going. As far as the contract, I'm very grateful, very thankful, very appreciative. But my main focus is go out there and win games, set the tone and be a better version than anyone's ever seen of me."
