Shemar Stewart Says Box Score 'Production Is a Little Overrated' Ahead of NFL Draft

Zach BacharApr 6, 2025

Texas A&M edge-rusher Shemar Stewart expressed his belief that numbers don't tell the whole story of a player's impact while preparing for the 2025 NFL draft.

"[Box score] production is a little overrated," Stewart said, according to ESPN's Jeff Legwold.

While evaluating defensive lineman solely based on their sack production doesn't provide the full picture of their pass-rushing ability, some NFL teams could still be concerned that Stewart amassed just 4.5 sacks in 37 total games with the Aggies.

He recorded 1.5 sacks to go along with six tackles for loss, two passes defensed and one forced fumble in 12 appearances during his 2024 campaign.

"I wasn't a sack-chasing warrior," Stewart explained, per Legwold. "I just wanted to become the best player for my team. And sometimes the stats don't show that. Sometimes, I have to play dead to rights, and sometimes I just couldn't finish or just couldn't get there in time."

He was still listed as the No. 3 edge-rusher and No. 19 overall player in the 2025 draft class on the latest big board from Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department.

B/R NFL Scout Matt Holder acknowledged Stewart's low sack total, but still believes that he'd be able to instantly contribute as a rookie.

"Stewart can contribute immediately as a two-down defender and could grow into a complete player," Holder wrote in his scouting report. "However, as his underwhelming sack production suggests, he will take some time to develop as a pass-rusher."

Stewart's impressive athleticism also shows his upside, as he finished with a 40-yard dash time of 4.59 seconds at the 2025 NFL scouting combine. His 10'11" broad jump and 40" vertical jump ranked No. 1 and No. 2 among all edge-rushers at the combine, respectively.

If a front office is willing to look past his sack production, he could hear his name called early when the draft begins on April 24.
