Which Position Should Travis Hunter Play with Top 6 Teams in the 2025 NFL Draft?

Moe MotonApr 6, 2025

A true unicorn prospect, Travis Hunter has the potential to become an elite wide receiver or cornerback in the NFL. Teams will assess where he fits best, but the two-way player provided some offensive eye candy at Colorado's pro day.

Viewers raved about Hunter's route-running ability, which is a trait that will allow him to win before he touches the ball.

Teams won't lose sight of Hunter's potential to be a rare shutdown cornerback who can also force turnovers, though offensive coaches can make the case that they can use more of his ball skills at receiver.

Because of his unique skill set, Hunter is unlikely to fall far outside the top five picks in the 2025 draft.

So, let's break down which position he should play with teams in the top six draft spots. Sorry, New York Jets fans, he won't be available at No. 7.

Tennessee Titans: Wide Receiver

Since October, the Tennessee Titans have traded DeAndre Hopkins and allowed Nick Westbrook-Ikhine to walk in free agency.

Hopkins provided veteran experience but produced modestly in Tennessee. Westbrook-Ikhine led the Titans in touchdowns (nine) last year. By the way, 2022 first-rounder Treylon Burks has struggled to stay healthy, missing 24 games in three seasons.

If Tennessee takes Travis Hunter, he can help most at receiver, arguably the team's biggest need besides quarterback.

At cornerback, the Titans can roll with L'Jarius Sneed, whom they acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs last offseason, and Jarvis Brownlee, who had a solid rookie campaign on the perimeter. Brownlee logged 75 tackles, seven for loss, nine pass breakups and an interception while allowing an 86.7 passer rating in coverage.

Though the quarterback position would remain a question mark, Tennessee can attempt to trade back into the first round for Jaxson Dart, add a signal-caller on Day 2 or bring in a veteran like Carson Wentz or Kirk Cousins (via trade) to compete with Will Levis.

As a complement to Calvin Ridley, Hunter can help whoever starts for the Titans at quarterback.

Cleveland Browns: Wide Receiver

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry told reporters that he sees Travis Hunter as primarily a wide receiver and explained why.

"We would see him as a receiver primarily first, but I think part of, again, what makes him a bit of a unicorn is the fact that he can do both at a high level," Berry said to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine.

"I do think that there's just an element where his superpower, his superpower, they're really his ball skills and that's a position where you can use it a hundred times during the season versus maybe 30 on the high end.

Berry is correct in pointing out that Hunter tracks the ball well. In his last year at Colorado, he caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns and snagged four interceptions.

In Cleveland, Hunter can catch 100-plus passes in his rookie season. Remember, the Browns traded Amari Cooper before the 2024 trade deadline, and Elijah Moore is still a free agent.

Last season, Jerry Jeudy took a significant number of snaps in the slot, so Hunter could be the Browns' primary perimeter receiver on some plays.

New York Giants: Cornerback

Last year, the New York Giants drafted Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick. They re-signed Darius Slayton on a three-year, $36 million deal. Wan'Dale Robinson has been the team's primary slot receiver, and his receiving numbers have trended up over three years.

Meanwhile, the Giants have a major question mark at cornerback. They signed Paulson Adebo to a three-year, $54 million contract in free agency, and he's their best cornerback.

Deonte Banks, a 2023 first-rounder, has been inconsistent through his first two seasons. He allowed six touchdowns and a 124.6 passer rating in coverage last season. The coaching staff should give him another year to play up to lofty expectations, but Hunter has the potential to become a lockdown cornerback on the pro level.

Bleacher Report scout Cory Giddings broke down what makes Hunter special in the secondary.

"Travis Hunter projects as a top-10 pick in the NFL draft with the potential to become an elite cornerback at the next level. His combination of length, athleticism, and football intelligence makes him a valuable asset in both man and zone coverage schemes…With proper development, Hunter has the tools to become a perennial Pro Bowler and one of the top cornerbacks in the league."

If the Giants draft Hunter, they could place Banks on the trade block.

New England Patriots: Wide Receiver

The New England Patriots shored up the cornerback position when they signed Carlton Davis III to a three-year contract worth up to $54 million in free agency. He'll line up opposite Christian Gonzalez, a 2024 second-team All-Pro

Last season, Marcus Jones played well, taking more than half of his snaps out of the slot position, logging 10 pass breakups and an interception.

New England's wide receiver corps isn't as solid as its cornerback unit.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Diggs is expected to be ready to play in Week 1 after he tore his ACL last October.

Even if Diggs is ahead of schedule, he may not operate optimally after a significant knee injury, especially in a new offense.

The Patriots can add Travis Hunter as the spark plug for the passing offense. He could be an immediate upgrade over the mediocre grouping of receivers on their roster.

Keep in mind that slot receiver DeMario Douglas led the Patriots' receivers with modest totals in catches (66) and receiving yards (621) last year. Hunter can raise the bar in New England's aerial attack.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Wide Receiver

Travis Hunter can genuinely be a two-way player with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who can use some help at wide receiver and cornerback.

According to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe, the Jacksonville Jaguars want to move cornerback Jarrian Jones outside after they signed Jourdan Lewis in free agency. Jones lined up primarily in the slot last season, so it's not a lock that he can transition seamlessly to the outside on the pro level.

That said, Jones played most of his snaps on the perimeter at Florida State. He could be a solid fit opposite Tyson Campbell in the secondary.

This offseason, the Jaguars traded wideout Christian Kirk. They also cut tight end Evan Engram, who played a big role in their offense, leading the team in receptions (114) for the 2023 season.

Though Jacksonville signed Dyami Brown, he has 30 or fewer catches in all four of his seasons. Gabe Davis is far too inconsistent for the No. 2 wide receiver role.

Brian Thomas Jr. and Hunter could be a dynamic receiver duo in the Jaguars' revamped offense under new head coach Liam Coen.

Las Vegas Raiders: Cornerback

The Las Vegas Raiders should look to bolster their receiver and cornerback groups, though they have a greater need to upgrade the secondary.

All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers will be the Raiders' top target in the passing game for the foreseeable future. Jakobi Meyers filled in well as a No. 1 receiver and No. 2 pass-catcher in the offense after the team traded Davante Adams to the New York Jets last October.

Furthermore, according to The Athletic's Vic Tafur, the Raiders "will add a veteran receiver soon."

In Las Vegas, Hunter would make a bigger impact as a cornerback.

Cornerback Jack Jones, allowed eight touchdowns and a 98.5 passer rating in coverage last season. According to Vincent Bonsignore of Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders will release him if they cannot trade him.

Though fellow cornerback Jakorian Bennett made strides in his second campaign, he missed seven games due to injury.

Hunter can be an upgrade over Jones and provide consistency on the back end of the Raiders defense. He could easily be the franchise's best cornerback since Hall of Famer Charles Woodson or Nnamdi Asomugha.
