PJ Hairston Cited for Driving with Revoked License: Latest Details and Reaction

Charlotte Hornets guard P.J. Hairston was cited June 18 for driving left of center with expired tags and a revoked license when he was caught speeding to practice.  

Jonathan Jones and Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reported the news of Hairston's run-in with the law Wednesday. Hairston was driving 51 mph in a 35 mph zone behind the wheel of his 2015 Cadillac Escalade.

Brittney Bogues, the CEO of the PR firm that supports Hairston, explained that misplaced paperwork was to blame for the revoked license citation and that her client actually had a valid license. Bogues added more about the 22-year-old's mishap away from the hardwood, per the report:

"

P.J. is young, he's human and we all make mistakes. Some of it was misrepresented. He was given a citation like any other person would be given. And once you comply with the situation and show proof of rectifying the situation, which he's done, everything is dismissed. He's really trying to focus on what he's here to do and that’s play basketball and support the community and get past this.

"

Hairston was charged with driving without a license in the summer of 2013, but he also faced a misdemeanor marijuana charge in that instance. Those charges were eventually dropped.

In July 2014, Hairston got into an altercation with a teenager during a YMCA pickup game, leading to misdemeanor assault and battery charges that were also ultimately thrown out. A similar outcome may be in store for Hairston based on Bogues' comments.

PrimetimeWFNZ Charlotte radio host Chris Kroeger doesn't believe Hairston's situation is severe:

The traffic citation isn't a major problem for the Hornets to be concerned about. What they ought to focus on is Hairston's performance on the court, which hasn't lived up to the first-round pick Charlotte invested in him last year.

Hairston's 29.4 percent shooting in three Orlando Summer League games isn't doing him any favors after an underwhelming rookie campaign. The fact that his traffic citations may be blown out of proportion due to his recent history of off-court issues won't help either.

There doesn't figure to be any disciplinary consequences for Hairston for such minor offenses, but the team announced Tuesday he is day-to-day right now with a left shoulder contusion. Hairston cannot seem to catch a break, and the best way he can hush his detractors is to simply play better.
