Wilson previously wore No. 3 for 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks and two with the Denver Broncos. He most recently donned the number during his 2024 stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cornerback Deonte Banks wore No. 3 for the Giants during the 2024 season.
Banks, who played as No. 25 during his rookie 2023 season, will now switch to No. 2, according to the team. Wilson thanked Banks for the switch on social media:
Wilson is the 18th player in Giants history to wear No. 3, per Pro Football Reference.
The most recent Giants players to compete as No. 3 prior to Banks were wide receiver Sterling Shepard, who wore the number from 2021 to 2023, preceded by two backup quarterbacks in Alex Tanney (2019) and Geno Smith (2017.)
Wilson is expecting to get more starts than either Tanney or Smith during their respective campaigns with the Giants. The veteran quarterback, who was signed days after the franchise added Jameis Winston on a two-year deal, told reporters he expects to start for the team next season.
The Giants could add further intrigue to the quarterback room this offseason if the franchise decides to use the No. 3 selection in the upcoming draft to target a signal caller like Shedeur Sanders, although the signing of Wilson and Winston will allow New York more flexibility with the pick. General manager Joe Schoen told reporters earlier this week the veteran duo will allow the Giants to "take who we think is the best football player" available.
