Shedeur Sanders' 40 Time Estimated To Be In 'High 4.7, Low 4.8' Range by CFB Coaches

While Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is gearing up for the chance to show his skills at the team's pro day on Friday, some have already started to speculate about his athletic traits.

As part of his latest mock draft, The Athletic's Bruce Feldman reported that rival coaches who faced Sanders in college "estimate [that he] is probably a high 4.7, low 4.8 (40) guy." Feldman noted that the 6'1.5", 212-pound signal-caller "does not have his dad’s remarkable athleticism," referring to Colorado head coach and Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.

Still, the 23-year-old's instincts were praised as a skill that makes up for his lack of top-end mobility.

"Even though he’s not fast, he was pretty elusive," a Big 12 defensive coordinator told Feldman. "What I thought he does very well is when plays broke down, that was a strength. Once the first read wasn’t there and he broke the pocket, he kept his eyes downfield and really had a nice touch and was accurate. Especially when he’s on the run, that’s when he’s most dangerous. I don’t know if he has any elite physical traits, but I do think he has elite processing and feel for the game."

Sanders was never known for his running ability during his collegiate career between Jackson State and Colorado. In four years, he threw for 14,327 yards and 134 passing touchdowns, dwarfing his 17 career rushing touchdowns.

Feldman predicted that Sanders would be selected by the New York Giants with the No. 3 pick. However, it's clear that there are questions surrounding his processing speed and his chances to improve that at the next level.

"Yeah, he’s smooth, and he operates well," a former NFL coach told Feldman, "but if he operates so well, why does he take so many sacks? I know his O-line is awful, and I get that to an extent, but I’m watching him, and like 40 percent of the sacks are on him. Dude, just throw the ball!"
