Islanders' Anthony Duclair Ripped as 'God-Awful' by Patrick Roy After Lightning Loss
New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy said Anthony Duclair was "god-awful" in a 4-1 Tuesday night loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Duclair was benched for long stretches before finishing the game with 12:15 of ice time.
"He was god-awful. He was god-awful. He had a bad game. That's why I didn't play him a lot. And he's lucky to be in the lineup. Sorry if I lose it on him right now, but that's how I feel," Roy said, per ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.
Roy told reporters the decision to cut Duclair's ice time below his season average of 15 minutes was in part due to "an effort thing."
Roy said, per Wyshynski: "He's not skating, he's not competing, he's not moving his feet. He's not playing up to what we expect from him."
Duclair spent more than 10 minutes on the Islanders' bench after his opening first-period shift.
He was shuffled back into the Islanders' lineup after Bo Horvat tied the game with a short-handed goal midway through the first period.
Duclair was then slow getting back to stop a Lightning rush midway through the second frame, which Nikita Kucherov finished off by feeding Jake Guentzel for the Lightning's go-ahead goal:
The Islanders, who were in contention for an Eastern Conference wild-card spot as recently as two weeks ago, have slipped back down the standings after going 0-4-2 in their last six games. MoneyPuck currently gives them a 2.9 percent chance of making the playoffs.
Duclair has recorded seven goals and four assists for 11 points in 44 games for the Islanders, which makes this one of the least productive seasons of his 11-season NHL career. He signed a four-year, $14 million deal with the Islanders last offseason and holds a no-trade clause this season, per Spotrac.
Roy, who took over as the Islanders' head coach midway through the 2023-24 campaign, reportedly has one season remaining on his deal as head coach.
