49ers' Jed York Says Departures in NFL FA Are Tied to Brock Purdy Contract Talks

Andrew PetersApr 1, 2025

The San Francisco 49ers have seen a significant number of key starters depart in free agency this offseason and have done little to replace them.

Niners owner Jed York said the mass departure of those players is one of the "sacrifices" the team has to make as it prepares to give quarterback Brock Purdy a significant raise.

"It's just a math thing," York said on Tuesday, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "When you sit down with your guys and figure out where do you want to go, what do you want to build, when you make the decision that you want to pay a quarterback that has obviously been underpaid for his first three seasons in the NFL. When you make that change, you have to make sacrifices somewhere. It's a decision that we made collectively, and we're hoping that we make somebody the highest-paid player in the history of our franchise."

Purdy is still on his rookie deal and will earn a base salary of just $5.35 million for the 2025 season. Even after struggling a bit in 2024, he's one of the best values in the league.

Purdy, who was without several key targets due to injuries throughout last season, threw for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns. He's just a season removed from posting MVP numbers in 2023 with 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Now the Niners are ready to commit to Purdy long-term, and York seems prepared to give him a significant raise.

Though San Francisco lost linebacker Dre Greenlaw, cornerback Charvarius Ward and several other starters, those departures could give the 49ers the flexibility to make Purdy a top-paid quarterback this offseason.

The Niners and Purdy haven't inked an extension yet, but York said Tuesday that negotiations have "been good" and the two sides are not "that far apart."
