NFL Exec: Packers' Tush Push Rule Change Proposal is 'Weak' and 'Reeks of Jealousy'

Jack MurrayMar 31, 2025

The proposed rule change to ban the infamous "tush push" does not appear to have universal support among the team leaders.

During an appearance on NFL Live, Kalyn Kahler of ESPN reported that some around the league believe the Green Bay Packers proposal to ban the play is more a result of "jealousy" than a true quest to make the game more even.

"The proposal is weak and reeks of jealousy," An NFL executive told Kahler. "Because it punishes one team, the Eagles, for being excellent at this play.

She also heard from a general manager that the proposal feels more like "sour grapes" than a legitimate quest to make the game safer.

"A general manager told me today that it feels like sour grapes," Kahler reported. "They are hiding behind player safety because there is no actual injury data."

The Packers made the proposal to ban the play, which the Eagles found tremendous success with over the past few seasons. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has scored 29 rushing touchdowns over the past two seasons, with many of them being off of the play.

Hurts scored five rushing touchdowns on the Eagles run to a Super Bowl LVIX title. He notably did not score one in the Eagles 22-10 Wild Card Round victory over the Packers.

Still, Green Bay proposed the rule change officially and it will be decided at the owners meeting. Kahler's initial reporting shows that the vote may not go the Packers way.
