Giants' Joe Schoen Eyes 'Best Football Player at' No. 3 amid Shedeur Sanders Rumors

The New York Giants intend to take the "best football player" with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft in the words of general manager Joe Schoen.

"We're in a position where we can take who we think is the best football player at that time," Schoen told reporters. "... If it matches up, if the value is right, we can look at many positions and take a guy."

Leading up to the draft, many are wondering whether New York will take Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders despite him arguably not being the top prospect who's likely to be available when the Giants are on the clock.

New York has added Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston this offseason, so the front office and coaching staff could decide to stand pat at the quarterback position.

The combined presence of Wilson and Winston certainly shouldn't stop the Giants from picking Sanders because, as currently constructed,d they're left without a viable option for 2026 and beyond.

"There has been a sentiment the Giants are less likely to take a quarterback with the No. 3 pick after the signings of Wilson and Winston," The Athletic's Dan Duggan wrote Monday. "It's hard to understand why that conclusion has been drawn."

Taking Sanders would be a bit of a gamble, even within the context of no draft prospect ever being a sure thing.

The Buffs standout is the No. 18 overall player on Bleacher Report's 2025 big board.

"Overall, Sanders' natural and pure passing abilities are the strength of his game," B/R NFL scout Dame Parson wrote in his assessment of Sanders. "He is capable of winning from clean pockets and out of structure. Sanders will pick defenses apart with his quick release and accuracy. He is a high-floor prospect with a good enough ceiling to buy into. With his experience and the challenges he has faced, he is worth betting on."

Using a top-five pick on Sanders will be a reach when few have him ranked that highly, but sometimes reaching for a player is necessary when combining the talent and positional value.

For Schoen, the next few weeks are largely about answering where Sanders falls on that scale.
