Brian Callahan Says Titans 'Getting Closer' to Top Pick Decision amid Cam Ward Rumors
Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan said the team is "getting closer" to making its choice for the No. 1 overall pick, he told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Callahan also name-dropped a few of the draft's top prospects, including Miami quarterback Cam Ward, who has been the most connected to the Titans at No. 1 overall.
"I think it's a short list at No. 1 for sure, it's all the guys that I think are worthy of it, the ones that everyone talks about out there, and between Travis (Hunter) and Shedeur (Sanders) and Cam (Ward) and Abdul Carter, I think those are, that's the top of the draft for me, those are the most elite players in the draft," Callahan told Pelissero. "There's going to be a lot of good ones certainly that come after them, but I think those at this moment are the best players in the draft and at the top of it."
According to Titans insider Paul Kuharsky, Tennessee put Ward through a private workout on Friday at Miami. Regarding his performance, "indications are the Titans thought Ward threw the ball well and did great," Kuharsky wrote.
Kuharsky also stated that "Ward is the presumed No. 1 pick if the Titans stay put." However, he also wrote that "their due diligence will include Shedeur Sanders' pro day on April 4 and a private workout on April 9."
The Titans are in need of a quarterback after seemingly putting an end to the Will Levis era with his benching last season. They're in the prime spot to take one at No. 1 overall, and Ward is widely considered the top signal-caller available. The B/R NFL Scouting Department ranks Ward as QB1 and the ninth-ranked prospect overall.
Ultimately, this seems like a spot where Tennessee should simply take the best quarterback available, giving the second-year head coach in Callahan and a first-year general manager in Mike Borgonzi their franchise signal-caller.
We'll find out soon enough what the Titans decide with the draft on Thursday, April 24 in Green Bay, but it's certainly possible that the news could more or less become a formality by then as well.
