Bubba Watson Says Scottie Scheffler's 2024 Was Better Than Tiger Woods' Historic 2000

Adam WellsMar 28, 2025

Bubba Watson is ranking Scottie Scheffler's historic 2024 season as the best in PGA Tour history, even ahead of Tiger Woods' memorable 2000 campaign.

Speaking to Sean Zak of Golf.com, Watson explained Scheffler's 2024 was "the best we've ever seen" because he did it when the level of competition on the PGA Tour was as high as it has ever been.

Scheffler won seven official PGA Tour events, including the Masters, Players Championship and Tour Championship. He also won gold in the men's individual event at the Paris Olympics.

The seven PGA Tour wins are tied for the fifth-most all-time in a single season. The only players ahead of him are Woods (three times) and Vijay Singh in 2004.

One of Woods' seasons that ranks ahead of Scheffler is 2000 when he won nine times on the PGA Tour. It was the most victories ever in a single season before Singh tied the mark four years later.

Woods' 2000 season included three wins in major tournaments (PGA Championship, U.S. Open, Open Championship). He would become the first player in history to hold all four major titles at the same time by winning the 2001 Masters.

The only players besides Woods who have won at least two major tournaments in the same year are Pádraig Harrington (2008), Rory McIlroy (2014), Jordan Spieth (2015) and Brooks Koepka (2017 and 2018).

Watson's argument is certainly sound because there are more good players on the PGA Tour than there have ever been. This isn't a disrespectful comment to Woods, who is probably the reason that a lot of current stars are playing the sport.

Scheffler, to his credit, doesn't really seem to care one way or another when asked about pursuing some of the historical markers set by Woods. He just continues to go out and play.

The strategy has worked out great for Scheffler so far as he looks to become the first repeat Masters champion since Woods in 2001 and 2002 when the tournament begins on April 10.
